Citigroup Global Markets Australia and affiliated units of the US banking group have crossed the five percent disclosure threshold in DroneShield, revealing a voting stake of 5.0754 percent. The notification, filed on 12 October with a holding date of 8 October, marks a notable institutional endorsement of the Australian counter-drone specialist at a market capitalisation of EUR 929.01 million.

The shares rose 6.7 percent on Friday to close at EUR 0.9388, though market participants pointed to no specific trigger for the day's advance. In European trading the stock has since traded at EUR 0.9396, sitting 14 percent above its 52-week low of EUR 0.8230.

Order Book Pencils In Years of Revenue

Underpinning the investment case are contracted revenues that stretch well beyond the current cycle. DroneShield booked A$261 million of bound revenue for fiscal 2026, landing at the midpoint of its earlier guidance range of A$250 million to A$270 million — a 35 percent increase on the prior-year figure. Commitments for later periods are already locked in: A$29 million for fiscal 2027, and a further A$17 million across 2028 and subsequent years. That forward visibility gives management a firmer hand in scheduling development and manufacturing capacity.

Whether the current level can be sustained is a matter of debate among market watchers. Future growth will require a broader customer base than the company has so far assembled, which is why DroneShield is courting buyers beyond state armed forces in the civilian and industrial security sectors.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

Costs Outpace the Top Line

The expansion carries a hefty price tag. Operating expenses reached A$103 million in the first half of 2026, against A$42 million a year earlier. Analysts flagged that underlying revenue development, stripping out the effect of contracts signed in prior periods, has largely flatlined. For investors, the emphasis is shifting from raw order volumes toward the profitability of the business model.

The company's widening reach was on display at the Land Forces trade fair, where industry reports indicated private firms also expressed interest in counter-UAS technology. Separately, the New South Wales state government is reportedly examining the deployment of modern detection systems in correctional facilities. DroneShield referenced earlier trials at an Australian prison but declined to comment on the procurement process currently under way.

Software Updates Deepen the Installed Base

Hardware aside, the software side is gaining weight. A newly released update sharpens target classification accuracy and is available to more than 4,200 active devices through the Mission Ready Services subscription platform. Announced on 14 October, the refresh focuses on detecting, identifying and defeating drones, with thermal camera recognition precision improving by 44 percent according to the company. The DroneSentry-C2 control platform is slated for release on 3 November.

On the personnel front, Candice Driver took over as Joint Company Secretary on 6 October, succeeding Carla Balanco, while Paul Cenoz continues in the same joint role.

US Army Framework Adds Ballast

The Citigroup registration lands roughly three weeks after DroneShield was named among the selected suppliers receiving framework contracts from the US Army under the Domestic Shield programme — a further source of institutional confidence for a company still proving that its investment outlay will convert into durable earnings.
