DroneShield has secured a place on a U.S. Army procurement vehicle worth up to $500 million, a three-year Indefinite-Delivery/Indefinite-Quantity arrangement tied to the JIATF-401 Domestic Shield program. The award, confirmed by the Australian counter-drone specialist on Wednesday, carries no guaranteed minimum order value — a structural feature of IDIQ contracts that leaves actual revenue dependent on task orders yet to be placed.

That distinction matters for a stock that has spent 2025 on the back foot. DroneShield shares closed Tuesday at EUR0.9862, down 45% since the start of the year and 74% below their 52-week high. The company's market capitalisation stands at EUR919.34 million.

How the Army Contract Works

Under the IDIQ framework, the U.S. Army determines specific work locations and funding allocations only when individual orders are issued. DroneShield's $500 million allocation sits within a broader Army procurement program capped at up to $7 billion, giving the company a defined but non-guaranteed slice of a much larger pie. The contract covers commercial counter-unmanned aircraft systems and small unmanned aircraft system defeat capabilities.

The award formalises what media outlets had already flagged on Tuesday, when reports of the $500 million vehicle first circulated.

Short Interest Stays Elevated

Professional investors remain wary. Short positions reported to Australia's securities regulator ASIC totalled 132,262,441 shares — equivalent to 14.2952% of issued stock. A separate media report citing ASIC data put the short interest figure at 14.36% as of Friday.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

That level of bearish positioning exposes the share price to sharp swings if market expectations shift and short sellers move to adjust their books. Concerns about the company's cash generation have been cited alongside the short data, though those worries are best understood as context for the pessimistic stance rather than a confirmed single trigger for the stock's decline.

Laser Partnership and Adelaide Expansion

On the operational front, DroneShield is broadening its technological base. The company has partnered with AIM Defence to fold the Fractl high-energy laser into its layered counter-drone architecture, tightening the link between sensors and defeat mechanisms. The move aims to sharpen effectiveness against unmanned aerial threats.

Development capacity is expanding at home as well. DroneShield opened a dedicated engineering site in Adelaide's Lot Fourteen innovation district, focused on embedded systems, sensors, communications and electronic warfare. According to government agency Defence SA, the facility is expected to create roughly 20 specialist engineering roles, backed by an investment program from the South Australian government.

DroneSentry-X Mk2 Enters Service

Roughly two weeks ago, DroneShield reported the completed installation and official acceptance of its DroneSentry-X Mk2 counter-drone units on U.S. military Infantry Squad Vehicles. Those deliveries came under the previously announced JIATF-401 contract. Since that announcement, the shares have shed 5.9%.

Boardroom Addition

DroneShield is also widening its oversight structure. Lynne Saint will join as an independent Non-Executive Director effective 24 November 2026. Saint previously held senior finance and audit roles at Bechtel and sits on the boards of Nufarm and Ventia.

Whether these combined steps — the Army vehicle, the laser tie-up, the Adelaide lab and the board refresh — can meaningfully ease the pressure from short sellers will hinge largely on how quickly order flow scales.
