DroneShield's Prison Radar Pitch Widens Its Civilian Reach, but Jefferies Says the Cost Line Is Winning

DroneShield has spent the past fortnight stacking up evidence that drone defence is no longer a military-only business. It has also spent it watching its share price slide. The two facts sit awkwardly together, and the gap between them is the story investors are now trying to price.

The stock closed at EUR 0.9386 in the prior session and was changing hands at EUR 0.9430 on Monday, a modest 0.4% gain on the day. That barely dents a year-to-date decline of 48%. Market capitalisation stands at EUR 929.01 million.

A Prison Tender, a Radar Preference and a No-Comment

The clearest signal of the civilian push came from Australia. According to an ABC News report dated 13 October, the New South Wales state government is procuring drone-detection technology for its prisons, with radio-frequency location and radar named as the preferred technologies in the tender.

DroneShield confirmed it had already tested systems of this kind at an Australian correctional facility. On the live procurement, the company declined to comment, citing the pending process.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

The logic extends well beyond gaols. Correctional institutions and critical-infrastructure operators are both grappling with unauthorised drone flights, and both are turning to counter-drone hardware to address them. Industry publication Australian Defence Magazine reported that the company also drew interest from industrial partners on interoperability and operational security at the Land Forces trade fair. DroneShield representatives used that forum to argue that the evolving threat demands multiple sensor types working in concert — a combination the sector treats as essential for reliably locating novel aerial vehicles.

The Order Book Is Full, and That Is Not the Problem

Contract visibility is not in question. As of 12 October, DroneShield reported A$261 million in contracted revenue for fiscal 2026 — precisely the midpoint of its own guidance range of A$250 million to A$270 million. Management also flagged A$29 million already locked in for fiscal 2027, with a further A$17 million booked for periods from 2028 onward.

The market's lukewarm reception to those numbers has little to do with the top line. The concern is that the operating cost base is threatening to outrun revenue growth and squeeze margins.

Jefferies gave that worry a number on 15 October, slapping an "Underperform" rating on the shares. Stripping out large contracts won earlier, the broker calculated an underlying weekly sales rate of roughly A$3.4 million for fiscal 2026, down from A$3.5 million in fiscal 2025. Operating expenses were named as the principal drag. Investors, in turn, are pressing for proof that spending on staff and structure is converting into profitable new business.

Software Gains: 44% and 18%

On the product side, DroneShield is working to defend its technical edge. Roughly a week ago it announced its fourth-quarter 2026 software update, distributed through the Mission Ready Services channel to more than 4,200 networked devices. Thermal camera classification accuracy improved by 44%, the company said, while fixed-wing drone identification precision rose 18%. The update covers detection, identification and defeat functions across the globally deployed fleet. Separately, the company's Access Portal technology platform picked up an Australian Good Design Award.

Whether any of this is enough to rebuild investor confidence comes down to cost control. The order book offers visibility; the expense line will decide what that visibility is worth.
