Europe's airspace has turned into an unexpected marketing channel for counter-drone hardware. A NATO fighter jet downed an unmanned aircraft over Lithuania, and Brussels Airport suffered serious flight disruptions — incidents that have pushed drone defense up the priority list for security agencies across the continent. For Australia's DroneShield, the demand signal could hardly be clearer. The company's financials tell a messier story.

A record topline, a hole underneath

Three weeks ago the group reported its first-half results for 2026, and the headline number was striking: revenue climbed 74 percent to a record A$125.8 million. Underneath that figure, however, the picture darkened considerably. DroneShield posted a statutory loss of A$32.2 million, reversing a modest profit from the same period a year earlier, and slid into negative territory at the adjusted EBITDA line as well.

Management pointed to a combination of factors: a less favorable product mix, adverse currency effects, and unplanned write-downs on inventory. Together they dragged the gross margin down from 65 percent to 60 percent. Larger customer orders, meanwhile, have grown more complex to execute, delaying when revenue actually lands on the books.

The market's verdict was swift. The stock fell 7.5 percent on the day of the release, and the pressure has not let up since. Most recently the shares closed at EUR 1.02, down 2.8 percent in the latest session, extending the year-to-date decline to 44 percent.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

Contracted revenue offers a cushion

What the balance sheet lacks in near-term earnings, the order book partly compensates for. DroneShield, which operates from its Australian base alongside sites in the United States and the Netherlands, has locked in A$251 million of contracted revenue for the full 2026 financial year. Management is guiding for total revenue of A$250 million to A$270 million, meaning the bulk of the target is already secured. A further A$46 million is contracted for 2027 and beyond.

New business continues to arrive. The company booked its first order for RfRecon, its reconnaissance system, from a Western European military customer, with delivery scheduled before the end of 2026. On the product side, DroneShield is folding the high-power Fractl laser built by partner AIM Defence into its open DroneSentry architecture. CTO Angus Harris said the interoperable system will be deployed with selected government and military clients.

Governance questions and a new finance chief

Not everything hanging over the stock is operational. CEO Angus Bean has acknowledged that DroneShield is cooperating with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) regarding certain trading activity from November 2025. The outcome of that probe remains unknown, and it adds a legal overhang to an already uncertain investment case.

On the personnel front, Rebecca Lowde is set to take over as chief financial officer on November 2, 2026, a hire the company frames as a step toward tighter capital discipline.

What has to go right

For the second half, management is projecting a recovery in gross margin to roughly 65 percent, supported by higher-margin software revenue and the first RfRecon deliveries. Whether that rebound materializes is the central question for investors. Drone defense remains a structurally growing market, and DroneShield's product portfolio is in demand internationally — but until the company demonstrates it can convert order growth into durable free cash flow and sustainable profit, the burden of proof stays with management.
