DroneShield's A$206 Million Backlog Can't Shake Off the Short Sellers

DroneShield's A$206M contracted revenue and product launches fail to lift shares, which remain near lows amid regulatory overhang and short-seller pressure.

The numbers tell one story. The share price tells quite another. DroneShield has locked in A$206 million in contracted revenue for fiscal 2026 — seven months into the year, with management sticking to its full-year target of A$250–270 million — and yet the market's response has been a shrug at best, a sell-off at worst.

The counter-drone specialist unveiled RfRecon on Monday, a portable radio-frequency reconnaissance device aimed at defence, government and security customers, and followed it the same day with an investor call detailing the product roadmap for its RF division. The launch extends a string of recent announcements: on 5 August, the company disclosed contracts worth A$23.2 million through a reseller for a European military end-customer, alongside the third generation of its RF-detection technology, RfAI-3.

None of it has moved the needle where it matters most. The stock slipped 2.75% on Tuesday even as the contracted-revenue figure surfaced, and the pattern has become familiar. Thursday's close of EUR 1.24 came after a 3.4% daily drop, leaving the shares down 9.3% over seven trading sessions and 13% over the past month. Friday's session has brought more of the same, with the stock at EUR 1.21, off 2.3% on the day and 11% on the week.

Institutional interest meets institutional scepticism

The shareholder register tells a story of conflicting signals. JPMorgan Chase built up its stake in early August, a move that sent the shares up 11% that day. Days later, Citigroup entities disclosed a holding of more than 5% — and this time the stock fell more than 3%.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DroneShield?

The divergence reflects a market that has grown wary of good news. DroneShield remains the most shorted stock on the Australian exchange, according to ASIC data, and the regulator's ongoing review of the company's disclosures and trading activity from November 2025 continues to hang over the stock. That governance overhang, combined with a trimmed full-year guidance delivered the previous Monday, has left investors disinclined to reward product launches or order flow.

A steep slide from the highs

The chart makes for sobering reading. The shares trade roughly 32% below their 200-day average and sit more than two-thirds off the 52-week high of EUR 3.79 reached in early October. They remain about 47% above the year's low of EUR 0.8230, set only in late November. Since the start of 2025, the stock has shed around 33% of its value.

Management, for its part, is holding its line. The investor update on Tuesday reaffirmed the A$250–270 million revenue forecast for fiscal 2026, with A$206 million already contracted after seven months. Company-adjacent reports suggest the interim results, due 26 August, will confirm the first-half revenue trajectory — with H1 2026 sales of A$125.8 million projected, a 74% increase year on year — along with the margin development.

The gap between order book and share price

The central tension for DroneShield investors is now well defined. On one side sits a growing backlog, a steady cadence of product releases and a management team actively courting institutional attention. On the other sits a heavily shorted stock, an active regulatory probe, and a market that has repeatedly punished even positive headlines.

Whether the 26 August interim numbers can finally bridge that gap is the question hanging over the counter-drone specialist. Until then, the stock remains caught between a growth story and a credibility problem — with the short sellers showing no sign of loosening their grip.
