Dongfeng's Research Hub Becomes First to Clear New AI Safety Standard for Vehicles

The race to regulate artificial intelligence in cars has reached a formal milestone. On 28 August 2026, TÜV Rheinland awarded the world's first certification under ISO/PAS 8800 to the product development and research centre of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, marking the first time any organisation has been officially vetted against the new safety framework.
The certificate covers the Chinese automaker's management processes rather than any specific vehicle model. It signals a shift in how the industry approaches the validation of AI-driven functions, which have long posed a problem for regulators because their behaviour is probabilistic rather than deterministic.
Closing the gap left by older standards
Until now, developers of AI-based driving systems have operated in a grey zone. The established ISO 26262 standard governs functional safety for electrical and electronic systems in road vehicles, but it was designed for conventional, deterministic technology. It does not adequately address systems that learn and adapt.
ISO/PAS 8800 was created to fill that void. It focuses on the probabilistic nature of AI and lays out requirements that span the entire lifecycle of an application, from the quality and integrity of training datasets to the architecture of the underlying models. Training processes, during which algorithms acquire their behaviour, are also subject to strict review criteria. The goal is reproducible, safe operation under real traffic conditions.
TÜV Rheinland's auditors examined the management structures and development workflows inside Dongfeng's research facility as part of the certification process.

How the new framework fits with existing rules
A key design feature of ISO/PAS 8800 is its compatibility with other safety standards already in use. It is intended to work alongside ISO 26262 and ISO 21448, the latter known in the industry as SOTIF (Safety of the Intended Functionality). SOTIF addresses risks that arise not from system faults but from functional limitations or unpredictable environmental conditions.
Together, the three standards form a comprehensive assessment framework for modern vehicle systems. Experts at the certification body noted that Dongfeng's approval demonstrates that transparency and risk-minimisation requirements can be embedded in the development process of AI models.

For Dongfeng, the certification validates its research and development efforts at an international level. For the wider automotive sector, it provides something that has been missing: a reference document that can be applied worldwide to assess the safety of AI components.
