Deutz Weighs Cologne Job Cuts Against Expansion Push Ahead of November 5 Quarterly Update

Deutz shares fell 2.3% to EUR 10.76 as reports of up to 300 job cuts in Cologne offset expansion moves and a Berenberg target hike.

Deutz shares slipped 2.3% to EUR 10.76 on Monday, a soft start to the week in a mixed broader market and with no fresh company news to steer sentiment. The pullback does little to dent a strong run for the Cologne engine maker, whose stock has still added 27% since the turn of the year. Trading remains comfortably above the 200-day moving average of EUR 10.44, a level that has underpinned the shares through recent sessions.

A Footprint in Flux

Behind the steady chart, the company is navigating a genuine transformation. Reports from Handelsblatt and dpa, citing people familiar with the matter, indicate Deutz plans to shed between 130 and 200 positions at its Cologne headquarters plant by the end of 2028. Under a worst-case scenario, as many as 300 jobs could be on the line. The cuts would fall disproportionately on the small-engine business, a segment wrestling with lackluster demand. A company spokesperson declined to comment on the reports, and Deutz has not officially confirmed the plans.

Those looming reductions sit alongside a string of expansionary moves that point in the opposite direction. Just over a month ago the group completed the acquisition of FFG, followed roughly three weeks ago by a partnership with Hypercraft. About two weeks back, Deutz delivered Gereon vehicles to Ukraine. Together, the initiatives signal an effort to open new application areas beyond the conventional engine business, even as the legacy segment comes under pressure from shifting demand patterns and a tough macroeconomic backdrop.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?

Insiders and Analysts Align

Confidence from within the company's own ranks has been on display. Two supervisory board members used the current market environment to build their positions. Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter acquired shares worth EUR 53,400 via Tradegate, while Dr. Rudolf Maier invested EUR 99,540.00 through the Stuttgart exchange. Transactions of this kind by board members draw close attention in the market, where they are often read as a signal of how leadership views the company's medium-term prospects.

Analysts have also turned more constructive. Berenberg raised its price target on Deutz on October 7 from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50, keeping a "Buy" rating on the stock. The private bank's move suggests the experts see further recovery potential in the engine manufacturer, reinforcing the view that the overhaul could strengthen earnings power over the medium term. At the same time, the new initiatives still have to prove they can offset the drag from the traditional engine segment.

November 5 in Focus

The next hard data point arrives on November 5, 2026, when Deutz publishes its quarterly statement for the first three quarters of 2026. That release will show how deeply the weaker small-engine business has weighed on results and how resilient revenue has been over the course of the year. It will also reveal what mark restructuring and repositioning have left on the balance sheet — the clearest test yet of whether the company's twin-track strategy is delivering.
