Deutz Slips With MDAX as Analysts Keep Faith in Turnaround Story
Published on 10/20/2026 at 16:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutz shares ran into selling pressure on Tuesday, tracking a broader retreat across European equity markets rather than any company-specific development. The MDAX-listed engine maker shed 3.7% to EUR 10.25, with the decline coming in lockstep with a weakening index backdrop.
The sour mood stemmed from a combination of factors flagged by Reuters: crude prices were climbing again, and jitters in European stock and bond markets — France and Spain in particular — sapped investors' appetite for risk. Germany's mid-cap benchmark came under selling pressure alongside the major indices, and Deutz ranked among the day's losers. The pullback widens the gap to the stock's 52-week high of EUR 13.39, set back in September.
Even so, the Cologne-based company's shares remain 22% higher since the start of the year, a gain that sits against a backdrop of far-reaching change at the engine manufacturer as it balances acquisitions with cost-cutting.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?
Brokerage Views Point Higher
Research analysts have stayed firmly in the bulls' camp. On October 13, MPCM rated the stock "Buy" with a price target of EUR 19, while Bernstein Research carries an "Outperform" rating and a EUR 12.40 target — both implying meaningful upside from current levels. MPCM expects engine production to remain subdued in the third quarter but anticipates a marked increase in order intake.
That upbeat stance reflects confidence in the group's strategic direction, even as market participants watch the operational overhaul closely. Management is pushing new initiatives forward while keeping costs at legacy sites in check.
Boardroom Reshuffle Tied to FFG Deal
The personnel changes have their roots in the acquisition of Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG). According to Handelsblatt, the planned reorganization of the supervisory board is directly linked to that takeover: two shareholder representatives are to leave the oversight body ahead of schedule, with the vacant seats to pass to representatives of FFG's former owners at the end of the year. The move folds the previous owners into the company's governance and marks a key step in integrating the new activities.
Cologne Plant Braces for Cuts
Alongside the expansion, the historic Cologne site faces painful retrenchment. Per a dpa report citing informed sources, 130 to 200 jobs could initially go at the main plant by the end of 2028, with as many as 300 positions affected in a worst case. Deutz confirmed talks with employee representatives but did not give a figure of its own. Handelsblatt, meanwhile, reported that up to 400 jobs could be at risk at the site, mainly in the small-engine business — a number Deutz has not confirmed. The negotiations underline the cost pressure bearing down on the traditional engine business.
