Deutz Insiders Put Money Behind Overhaul as Berenberg Backs Defense Pivot

Two supervisory board members at Deutz have opened their own wallets in recent weeks, a pair of insider purchases that landed just as the Cologne engine maker wrestles with shrinking demand for its smaller combustion engines and pushes ahead with a defense-driven repositioning.
Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter bought DEUTZ shares on Thursday with a transaction volume of EUR 53,400. His board colleague Dr. Rudolf Maier had already invested on October 1, acquiring stock worth EUR 99,540 at a per-share price of EUR 11.06. Purchases of this kind from the leadership tier are widely read by the market as a vote of confidence in the medium-term viability of a company's strategy — and both trades came during a stretch marked by heavy adjustments in Deutz's industrial core.
The shares closed Friday at EUR 11.01. That leaves the stock up 30 percent since the start of the year, even after a 17 percent pullback over the past 30 days. The equity also sits 18 percent below its 52-week high.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?
A Split Story: Cost Cuts at Home, Margins Abroad
Deutz's legacy small-engine business remains under pressure. A company spokesperson told WDR that demand for smaller motors has fallen noticeably. According to dpa, the group could initially cut 130 to 200 jobs at its Cologne headquarters through the end of 2028. Handelsblatt, citing insiders, reported deliberations that could extend to as many as 400 positions — a figure the company declined to comment on when asked.
The internal picture may be even starker. Handelsblatt sources indicate that further job reductions have been agreed at the Cologne site, potentially adding 300 roles to roughly 100 already affected. Deutz again offered no statement on request. dpa's reporting places the range at 130 up to a maximum of 300 positions in the weaker small-engine segment.
Offsetting that drag is the acquisition of defense contractor FFG, announced more than a month ago and met with a warm reception from analysts. On Wednesday, Berenberg raised its price target on Deutz from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50 and reaffirmed its "Buy" rating. Analyst Lasse Stueben attributed the move to the FFG deal, which he said establishes the group more firmly in the defense sector and noticeably improves its operating margin profile. The upgrade followed an earlier adjustment on October 6, when the same analyst lifted his target from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50.
November 5 Looms Large
For investors, the central question is how management squares restructuring costs in the existing business with the earnings potential of the defense arm. Hard numbers on the current operating condition arrive on November 5, 2026, when Deutz publishes its quarterly statement covering the first nine months of fiscal 2026. A subsequent conference call with analysts and investors should shed light on how the company intends to bridge the gap between cutbacks in classic engine manufacturing and its targeted growth in the security and defense space.
