Deutz Insiders Bet on Defense Pivot as Cologne Weighs Deep Cuts

Two supervisory board members at Deutz have put their own money behind the Cologne-based engine maker, even as the company wrestles with a slump in its legacy small-engine business and prepares for what could be a substantial reduction in its workforce.
Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter, who chairs the supervisory board, acquired a block of shares valued at EUR 53,400.00 at a price of EUR 10.68 per share through the Tradegate trading venue. His purchase follows an earlier move by fellow board member Dr. Rudolf Maier, who invested EUR 99,540.00 in Deutz stock on October 1, paying EUR 11.06 per share.
Berenberg Raises Target on FFG Deal
The insider buying coincides with a more bullish stance from analysts. On Wednesday, Berenberg lifted its price target on Deutz from EUR 13.00 to EUR 16.50 while keeping its "Buy" rating. Analyst Lasse Stueben pointed to the July-announced acquisition of FFG as the central reason for the upgrade.
That deal significantly expands Deutz's footprint in the defense sector. According to Stueben, the transaction opens up new market opportunities that sit outside conventional industrial cycles and simultaneously improves the engine manufacturer's margin profile. The strategic repositioning is designed to gradually reduce the company's reliance on its more volatile core markets.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?
Job Cuts Loom in Cologne
While the defense pivot draws analyst enthusiasm, the company's traditional operations remain under pressure. Reports of planned staff reductions at the Cologne site underscore the strain. Between 130 and 200 positions are initially said to be on the chopping block, with as many as 300 jobs potentially disappearing at the upper end. The Handelsblatt, citing insiders, has reported plans for cuts of up to 400 roles in the smaller-engine segment, while other accounts point to the 130-to-200 range. Deutz has not publicly commented on the reports.
The driving force behind the deliberations is weaker demand for small engines, which has prompted Deutz to adjust capacity. Talks with employee representatives are ongoing to determine how the measures will be structured. Management has yet to announce a final decision, as it seeks to counter persistent margin pressure in its core markets. The cutbacks in the established engine business make clear that the strategic transformation will take time before it can offset cyclical declines in the traditional segment.
Market Reaction and What Comes Next
The stock has been caught between these opposing forces. Deutz shares recently changed hands at EUR 11.01, and at one point traded at EUR 10.80, a daily loss of 0.8%. Over the past 30 days, the stock has retreated 17%, yet it still holds a gain of 30% since the start of the year. On a year-to-date basis, the shares are up 27%.
Investors will get a clearer picture of the actual operating situation next month. Deutz has scheduled the release of its quarterly report covering the first through third quarters of 2026 for November 5, 2026. That disclosure should reveal how deeply the demand slump has weighed on the group's earnings — and how quickly the shift toward the higher-margin defense business is gaining traction.
