Deutz Balances FFG Integration Against Deep Cuts at Cologne Engine Plant
Published on 10/18/2026 at 05:01 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutz is running two very different plays at once. In Cologne, where the company still builds its smaller engines, jobs are being pared back. At group level, the integration of Flensburger Fahrzeugbau Gesellschaft (FFG) is redrawing both the ownership register and the supervisory board. The market, for its part, is trying to work out which of the two will shape the earnings picture first.
Talks with employee representatives over further headcount reductions at the Cologne headquarters are already under way, company spokesman Lars Boelke confirmed, though he stressed that no final decision has been taken. Roughly 100 positions have already gone. Reports on the scale of what comes next diverge: WDR put the potential total at up to 300 jobs, while Handelsblatt cited as many as 400 in the smaller-engine segment. A separate report pointed to 130 to 200 roles being cut in that business by the end of 2028, with a worst case of up to 300. Deutz declined to comment on those figures.
Board Seats Change Hands
The FFG transaction, agreed a little over a month ago, is leaving its mark on the supervisory body. Two shareholder representatives are set to step down early so that their seats can pass to representatives of FFG's former owners at the end of the year. Those owners could end up holding as much as 29.9% of Deutz stock.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutz?
Confidence from inside the boardroom has been backed with cash. Supervisory board member Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter bought 5,000 Deutz shares on 8 October at EUR 10.68 apiece, a total of EUR 53,400.
Analysts Divided on Pace, Not Direction
Brokerage views on the stock span a wide range. Münchmeyer Petersen Capital Markets reiterated its "Buy" rating on Tuesday with a EUR 19 target. Analyst Stefan Augustin expects order intake to pick up sharply, even as engine output stays subdued. Bernstein Research reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating the same day, with a EUR 12.40 price target. Berenberg's Lasse Stueben, writing on 7 October, called the FFG deal a key step in the transformation, lifted his target to EUR 16.50 and kept a "Buy" recommendation.
The strategic logic behind the acquisition is to steady profitability and reduce reliance on engines alone. How much the weakness in the legacy business is still weighing on group results should become clearer on 5 November 2026, when Deutz publishes its quarterly statement for the first to third quarters of 2026 and walks investors and analysts through it in a conference call.
Deutz shares closed Friday at EUR 10.82. That leaves the stock up 27% since the start of the year, but 19% below its 52-week high of EUR 13.39, set in September.
