Deutsche Telekom has found a way to sell its network expertise to the very rivals it competes against for mobile customers. The Bonn-based group has developed its own RAN controller and is marketing the software to Vodafone and Telefónica in Germany, according to weekend media reports — a move that pairs in-house network development with an equipment business aimed at other operators.

The commercial logic is straightforward: licensing the controller to two of Germany's three major carriers gives the technology a revenue stream beyond Telekom's own footprint. How much it ultimately contributes to group earnings will hinge on how widely the software travels beyond those named customers and what licensing terms can be struck. For investors, it adds a fresh angle on valuation — provided the arrangement matures into a durable business rather than a one-off sale. It also sits alongside, rather than replaces, the traditional scrap for subscribers.

Spectrum, Hardware and a Loosening Deadline

On a separate front, Telekom is weighing a bid with three other operators for 20 MHz of European MSS spectrum. The review opens another strategic option, though its economic value depends on the terms of any acquisition and how the frequencies are eventually used.

There is also more breathing room on the hardware side. A mooted 36-month timetable for swapping out Huawei equipment is largely off the table, according to CEO Timotheus Höttges, who put the cost of such a replacement for the European industry at EUR 40 billion. A longer implementation window would suit capital planning — assuming regulators genuinely ease the time pressure. The takeaway for shareholders is how much financial headroom network modernization and regulatory demands end up consuming.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Q3 Growth Underpins the Strategy

The operating backdrop is supportive. Organic group revenue rose 5.5% to EUR 31.1 billion in the third quarter of 2026, while adjusted net profit climbed 12.7% to EUR 3.0 billion. That combination — top-line expansion and faster bottom-line growth — strengthens the starting position for the initiatives above, so long as momentum holds and fresh network requirements do not overstretch the balance sheet.

Management is putting money behind the confidence. The dividend for 2026 is slated to rise to EUR 1.10 per share, and the company plans share buybacks of up to EUR 2 billion for 2027. Guidance was lifted too: adjusted EBITDA AL is now expected at around EUR 47.6 billion for the full year 2026, with free cash flow AL seen at roughly EUR 20.1 billion.

Recognition, Recycling and an AI Chip Bet

The quarter's operational news flow was busy. Telekom said it took first place in Computer BILD's mobile network test — its 15th consecutive win — earning an overall grade of "very good (1.2)." On Wednesday it unveiled the "Telekom Equipment Exchange," a platform letting the group's national companies pass surplus network equipment to one another for internal reuse. And T-Systems, the group's IT arm, signed a letter of intent on Tuesday with Dresden-based Sparxity to examine integrating the latter's energy-efficient AI chips and computing systems into T-Systems infrastructure.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Investors get their next look under the hood on 25 February 2027, when fourth-quarter 2026 figures are due. Between now and then, the question that matters is whether Telekom keeps opening new revenue lanes — software licensing, spectrum options, smarter equipment planning — while keeping investment in check. All of them pull on the same lever: squeezing more economic return out of the networks.
