Deutsche Telekom Taps Iridium Satellites for IoT as Boardroom Handover Takes Shape

Deutsche Telekom is pushing deeper into satellite connectivity and artificial intelligence while simultaneously preparing a leadership transition that will reshape its executive floor over the next two years. The twin moves come as the Bonn-based carrier works to convince investors that its network build-out and technology spending justify patience.
Network demand keeps climbing. During the opening weekend of Munich's Oktoberfest, the operator logged 57.7 terabytes of data traffic on the Theresienwiese grounds — an 18 percent jump from the same period a year earlier. Those figures underscore the steady capacity pressure the company must absorb through continued infrastructure investment.
Satellite Push Extends Beyond Terrestrial Coverage
On September 17, Deutsche Telekom announced it would commercially open Iridium's low-earth-orbit satellite network to its business customers in the Internet of Things segment. The so-called multi-orbit IoT roaming service is designed to keep data links alive in areas that conventional cell towers cannot reach.
The ambitions stretch beyond that partnership. According to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Vodafone and Telefónica are in early-stage talks about forming a consortium to jointly use EU satellite frequencies for direct-to-device mobile services.
AI Spending and a Dedicated Investor Day
Recheninfrastruktur — computing infrastructure — has moved toward the center of the group's strategy. At the Digital X event on September 9, CEO Tim Höttges announced additional outlays for AI systems, including expansion of the Industrial AI Cloud in Munich. Investors will get a fuller picture of those plans on October 5, 2026, when the company hosts a dedicated investor day on artificial intelligence opportunities.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Executive Reshuffle Sets Up a Two-Year Handover
The management overhaul spans several key roles. Mladen Mitic takes over as Chief Product & Digital Officer on October 1, 2026. A month later, on November 1, 2026, Jan Hofmeyr steps in as the new board member for product and technology, bringing experience from AWS, Comcast and Microsoft.
Longer-term clarity comes at the finance helm. CFO Christian Illek will leave Deutsche Telekom in April 2027 for age reasons, with Dhananjay Mirchandani succeeding him on May 1, 2027.
Elliott's Stake Keeps Capital Allocation in the Spotlight
The use of corporate funds remains the dominant market theme. Per a Bloomberg report, Elliott Investment Management has built a significant stake and is pressing for greater value realization. The activist is urging the company to steer clear of merger plans involving T-Mobile US and to expand share buybacks.
Management had already responded in August, extending its running repurchase program by up to 3 billion euros through year-end. That same month, the Bonn group strengthened its European fixed-line business, agreeing with Macquarie Asset Management to take full ownership of Polish fiber operator Fiberhost and provider Inea for an enterprise value of roughly 1 billion euros.
Share Price Under Pressure
The operational momentum has yet to halt the stock's recent slide. The shares currently trade at 27.10 euros, a daily loss of 1.1 percent, and are down 2.5 percent since the start of the year. A separate reading earlier in the week had the stock at 27.30 euros, off 0.4 percent on the day, following losses the prior week.
Whether the Bonn carrier can sustain its course in the second half will become clearer on November 5, 2026, when third-quarter results are due. Until then, strategic signals from management will largely determine how the market weighs the interplay of network expansion, technology investment and shareholder returns.
