Deutsche Telekom's German Engine Impresses, but the US Shadow Keeps the Bulls in Check
Published on 11/06/2026 at 13:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deDeutsche Telekom's third-quarter 2026 showing has handed the bulls fresh ammunition — just not enough of it to bring the whole analyst community around. Two research houses read the same set of numbers this week and arrived at conclusions roughly ten euros apart, a gap that says as much about the durability of the growth on display as it does about the results themselves.
At the heart of the disagreement sits a single question: how much of the recent revenue beat came from business that will show up again next quarter? JPMorgan's Akhil Dattani put the upside outside T-Mobile US at a little over 3%, crediting WM licensing income, service revenue and sales of devices and network hardware. Bernstein's Ulrich Rathe landed on the same 3% overshoot against consensus, and both flagged an operating result that came in slightly ahead of expectations. Where they part ways is on what that is worth. JPMorgan kept its "Overweight" rating and a price target of 38 euros; Bernstein stayed at "Market-Perform" with a target of 28.10 euros.
The group-level figures give the optimists plenty to work with. Revenue rose 5.5% organically to 31.1 billion euros in the quarter, while adjusted EBITDA AL climbed 8.0% organically to 12.2 billion euros — operating profit outpacing the top line. Adjusted net profit advanced 12.7% to 3.0 billion euros. That combination of faster earnings growth on a rising revenue base is precisely the mix that would justify the more generous valuation, provided it holds.
Germany is where the operational case looks firmest. UBS analyst Polo Tang reaffirmed his buy recommendation and a 35.10 euro target, pointing to domestic momentum as the counterweight to lingering questions over the American business. The home market turned in quarterly revenue of 6.6 billion euros, up 3.9% year on year, with EBITDA AL ahead by 1.5%. Fibre build-out hit a quarterly record of 190,000 new connections, concrete evidence of the demand chief executive Tim Höttges has been highlighting. Höttges, citing Reuters, named both T-Mobile US and German mobile and fibre as the group's growth engines.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
On the group's own outlook, management has now raised its annual profit guidance three times this year. Höttges said the company is on track to exceed its targets. For 2026 the group expects EBITDA AL of around 47.6 billion euros and free cash flow AL of roughly 20.1 billion euros. Shareholders have something tangible to look at too: the board intends to propose a dividend of 1.10 euros per share and has pencilled in share buybacks of up to 2 billion euros for 2027.
The catch, as Tang's note makes plain, is that the US subsidiary carries a substantial share of the growth while still generating unanswered questions. His buy case pairs confidence in Germany with a caveat on America — a split verdict that mirrors the wider divide on the Street. The revenue beat alone, both JPMorgan and Bernstein implicitly agree, is not a sufficient basis for an investment decision. What matters is whether service revenue keeps contributing, or whether licensing and hardware income fade without a replacement.
That makes the composition of growth the metric to watch. If service revenue carries on and earnings momentum persists, the bullish reading gains credibility; if revenue quality slips, the cautious camp strengthens its hand. The interplay between revenue mix, profit and cash generation is what will ultimately decide which target — 38 euros or 28.10 — looks closer to the mark.
Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
A date is already circled for the next reckoning: fourth-quarter 2026 results are due on 25 February 2027. That report will show whether the group delivers on its raised guidance and whether Germany sustains its growth trajectory — the confirmation the positive case needs, ideally accompanied by a thinning of the uncertainty hanging over the US business.
