Deutsche Telekom's Fiber Build-Out Gains Political Tailwind as Cloudflare Deal Reshapes Enterprise Play

Deutsche Telekom shares finished Friday's session 1.9% higher at EUR 26.58, capping a week in which the Bonn-based carrier paired ground-level construction work with a fresh push into higher-margin digital services. The advance came as investors weighed a potential regulatory reprieve in Brussels against a mixed analyst reception.
Trier Groundbreaking Kicks Off Multi-Region Build
Construction crews broke ground Friday in Trier, where the company plans to connect roughly 8,400 households and businesses across four city districts. More than 55 kilometers of cable will be laid, with completion targeted for the end of 2027. The work forms part of a broader strategy that sees the group densifying existing lines in metropolitan areas while extending coverage to smaller municipalities. Progress was also reported in Bavaria, where both locations will gain access to gigabit speeds.
Asset Deal Adds 87,000 Homes in Essen
Beyond its own construction, Deutsche Telekom is consolidating through acquisitions. An asset deal will bring the fiber networks of ruhrfibre Essen and Metrofibre under its control, covering a combined 87,000 households. The company's own fiber infrastructure in Essen already reaches approximately 288,000 homes, and an additional local network is expected to supply further connections down the road.
Cloudflare Partnership Targets European Enterprise Clients
On the enterprise side, the carrier is widening its portfolio through a tie-up with Cloudflare. The cooperation adds security and connectivity solutions to Deutsche Telekom's business-customer offering, while both partners are interconnecting their networks directly to harden data transfers and cut latency. For the DAX-listed group, the move marks another step into higher-margin digital services beyond classic connectivity.

Network Metrics Show Momentum
August brought 222,000 additional fiber connections, lifting the total addressable base to 14.1 million households and businesses able to book bandwidth of up to 2,000 Mbit/s. Mobile infrastructure is advancing in parallel: with data traffic growing roughly 30% annually, the company says it has modernized about half of its mobile sites. August alone saw 115 new locations added and extra capacity activated at 401 existing masts.
Distribution is expanding too. Three new green electricity tariffs launched on the MeinMagenta app platform in partnership with provider Rabot Energy, which handles supply and customer service.
Brussels Signals Flexibility on Huawei, ZTE Swap-Out
Political support for the capital-intensive build-out is emerging. EU member states appear set to scrap rigid deadlines for replacing high-risk network technology, a shift that could spread up to EUR 40 billion in mandatory investments across a longer timeline. Removing the strict schedule would give operators meaningful financial flexibility. With rising profits and growing cash flow, Deutsche Telekom could steer funds more deliberately into fiber. The development follows a Reuters report on the deliberations, which Bernstein Research analyst Ulrich Rathe flagged when he rated the stock "Market-Perform" with a EUR 28.10 price target on Tuesday.
