Berenberg keeps Buy while Bernstein cuts Deutsche Telekom to Market-Perform, citing T-Mobile US merger uncertainty and German broadband competition.

Deutsche Telekom is broadening its business well beyond the traditional connectivity trade, pairing network upgrades with cloud applications and live sports. Yet the stock's recent run has left the analyst community sharply at odds, and the coming weeks bring two events that could settle the argument.

Shares in the Bonn-based carrier ended Friday at EUR 26.59, up 1.9%. That still leaves the equity roughly 23% below its 52-week high of EUR 34.35, and the group's market capitalization stands at EUR 127.03 billion.

Berenberg stays bullish, Bernstein steps aside

The split among research houses was on full display Friday. Berenberg's Nick Lyall reaffirmed his "Buy" rating and continues to count Deutsche Telekom among his top picks in the European telecom sector.

Bernstein Research took the opposite tack, downgrading the DAX constituent from "Outperform" to "Market-Perform" and cutting its price target to EUR 28.10 from EUR 37. According to media reports, the analysts flagged mounting uncertainty over a possible merger with T-Mobile US, alongside margin pressure from intensifying competition in Germany's fixed-line broadband market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Bernstein analyst Ulrich Rathe had already drawn attention to a separate industry issue on September 30, pointing to a proposal by EU member states for a more flexible timetable on replacing critical network components. In his view, such relief could hand operators like Deutsche Telekom extra operational room to maneuver.

Fiber, cloud and basketball rights

Management is pressing ahead with its home-market buildout regardless of the market debate. The company recently agreed, via an asset deal, to acquire the fiber infrastructure of ruhrfibre Essen and Metrofibre, adding a network reaching roughly 87,000 households. Deals of this kind lock in connection capacity against a strengthening field of rivals.

On the digital services side, Deutsche Telekom unveiled a new AI-based solution with caery on Tuesday. Built on the T Cloud Public platform, the system automates workflows for health and long-term care insurers, with a focus on digital benefits assessment, billing and payouts.

The group also bolstered its media offering, securing exclusive rights to the Basketball Champions League for its MagentaSport streaming platform on September 25. Under the agreement, every game involving a German team will be shown live, along with all fixtures from the quarterfinals onward. The 2026/27 season tips off on October 6, 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Data traffic keeps climbing

Surging demand for data-heavy video and cloud services keeps the investment treadmill running. According to company figures released Wednesday, mobile network traffic is growing at about 30% a year. Deutsche Telekom says it has modernized roughly half of its mobile sites, bringing 115 new locations online in August alone and boosting capacity at 401 existing masts.

What investors are watching next

Attention now turns to two dates on the corporate calendar. On October 5, Deutsche Telekom hosts its AI Investor Day, devoted to the opportunities and applications of artificial intelligence across the group. Concrete numbers arrive a month later, when the company publishes its third-quarter 2026 report on November 5 — the first real test of how well the operating business has withstood the tougher competitive landscape.
