Deutsche Telekom has attached a new yardstick to its circular-economy ambitions, unveiling a bespoke metric for a plan that aims to make both network operations and the device business almost entirely circular by 2030. The Bonn-based group disclosed the measurement standard on Thursday, giving investors something the strategy previously lacked: a way to check whether the goal is actually being met.

The target spans more than a single product line, reaching from the running of the networks to the handsets and hardware the company sells. Management is careful to frame it as a strategic intention rather than a state already achieved — a distinction that matters when the same investor presentation also carries hard financial targets.

Where the Real Financial Anchor Sits

For all the novelty of the circular metric, the more concrete reference point for valuing the business remains the group's financial guidance. At its AI investor day on October 5, Deutsche Telekom reaffirmed both its forecast and its medium-term objectives, and quantified what automation is expected to deliver: roughly EUR 2.5 billion in savings on indirect costs by 2030, measured against a 2023 baseline.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

The efficiency drive is only half the story. Telekom also expects artificial intelligence to generate new business, projecting around EUR 250 million in AI revenue with enterprise customers outside the US for 2026, rising to roughly EUR 800 million by the end of the decade. Cost reduction and fresh revenue therefore sit side by side on the agenda — though both remain forward-looking expectations, not results already banked.

Two Clocks Running in Parallel

The circular strategy and the AI savings plan are separate undertakings, yet they answer the same overarching question for shareholders: how the company intends to tie its operational evolution to economic efficiency. The savings programme supplies a financial target; the circularity push describes the intended direction of the network and device operations. Neither substitutes for an earnings forecast, and the confirmed guidance stays the financial frame within which the longer-term plans should be read.

Meanwhile, a different clock is already ticking — and it records completed transactions rather than intentions. Since the buyback programme began on August 10, Deutsche Telekom had repurchased 25,291,549 of its own shares as of the end of the reporting period. In the week from October 5 through October 9 alone, it bought back 4,272,881 shares, according to the interim disclosure published on Monday. For shareholders, the gap between a stated ambition and shares actually acquired is not a technicality; the two carry very different weight.

November 5 as the Next Reckoning

The next fixed checkpoint for judging operating progress is November 5, 2026, when the group will publish its third-quarter 2026 results. That release will put financial performance front and centre, standing alongside the longer-horizon benchmarks for circularity and automation. Until then, investors are left weighing a set of long-term efficiency and growth targets against the next concrete report on how the business is actually trading.
