Deutsche Telekom Gears Up for AI Investor Day as Bernstein Retreats to Neutral

Bernstein cut Deutsche Telekom to Market-Perform with a EUR 28.10 target, citing T-Mobile US merger uncertainty and German broadband competition.

Deutsche Telekom has packed its autumn calendar with product launches and platform deals, but the buzz around its operational momentum is being tempered by a more cautious stance from at least one major research house. The Bonn-based carrier will host an AI Investor Day on October 5, giving management a stage to spell out how artificial intelligence fits into its broader digital strategy — and how that strategy squares with the tougher competitive realities in Germany and the United States.

Ahead of that event, the stock closed the prior trading week modestly higher, finishing Friday at EUR 27.09 for a gain of 0.5%. Even so, the shares remain 21% below their 52-week high, a gap that underscores how much ground the company still has to recover.

Analyst Downgrade Casts a Shadow

The more sober mood can be traced in part to Bernstein Research. On Friday, analyst Ulrich Rathe cut his rating on Deutsche Telekom from "Outperform" to "Market-Perform" and trimmed the price target to EUR 28.10 from EUR 37. As Reuters reported the same day, the brokerage pointed to uncertainty surrounding a potential merger with T-Mobile US, intensifying competition in Germany's fixed-line broadband market, and a neutral view on T-Mobile US from Bernstein's own US team.

Despite the downgrade, the stock held its ground, ending the week with that 0.5% advance — a sign that investors were not rushing for the exits.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Buyback Program Keeps Running

Supporting the share price is the company's ongoing repurchase effort. Between September 14 and September 18, Deutsche Telekom bought back 2,945,800 of its own shares. Since the current tranche began on August 10, the total has reached 14,005,765 shares.

A Flurry of Product and Platform Moves

While analysts reassess the bigger picture, the company has been busy on several fronts. On the connectivity side, Deutsche Telekom expanded its IoT roaming on September 17 to include Iridium's low-earth-orbit satellite network, now commercially available for compatible narrowband devices. Partners involved in the technical demonstration of the multi-orbit service included Toyota, Nordic Semiconductor, Fraunhofer IIS, KYOCERA AVX and Jember.

The entertainment and services portfolio has also been broadened. MagentaTV integrated Warner Bros. Discovery's HBO Max streaming service midweek, giving customers the option to book the programming directly through the carrier's own platform. On September 21, the group launched T-Travel, a global digital SIM platform that lets users purchase mobile data packages for more than 200 destinations and activate them straightaway on eSIM-capable devices. A day earlier, on September 15, it introduced the Product Emissions Calculator, a tool for measuring the CO? footprint of individual products.

Sports content got a boost as well: on Friday the company secured exclusive rights to the Basketball Champions League, whose season tips off on October 6.

Betting on Bricks and Mortar

Distribution is another area of investment. Deutsche Telekom plans to roll out 50 new or redesigned shops across Germany in 2027, supplementing its existing branch network. Media reports indicate the push will include pop-up locations designed to extend the company's physical sales presence flexibly and engage customers face to face. The in-person advice is intended to help retain fixed-line and mobile contracts while capturing new market share — a counterweight to the challenging conditions at home.

What Comes Next

After the technology-focused investor day on October 5, market attention will shift to November 5, when Deutsche Telekom reports its third-quarter financial results. Between the AI narrative it hopes to sell and the competitive pressures Bernstein has flagged, the company has a narrow window to convince investors that its operational bets will pay off.
