Deutsche Telekom: Fiber Wins and Football Rights vs. a Satellite Wildcard

Deutsche Telekom shares slid 8.6% Friday on satellite mobile competition fears, even as it renewed 3. Liga rights and posted fiber gains.

Deutsche Telekom spent the back half of last week stacking up operational wins — a long-term media rights deal, fresh fiber milestones, a seven-million-unit housing order — while the market focused on something it cannot yet measure. Shares fell 8.6% on Friday as investors weighed the prospect of satellite-based mobile competition in the United States, where the company's 54% stake in T-Mobile US leaves it directly exposed.

The trigger was SpaceX's agreement to acquire a nationwide spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. That deal remains subject to regulatory approval and has not yet closed, meaning what rattled European and US telecom stocks on Friday was a forward-looking competitive threat rather than a realized loss of business. Reuters reported that the news pressured the sector broadly, with Citi analysts describing it as an ongoing risk for telecom and cable names — language that suggests the concern could outlast a single trading session.

Rights Deal Locks In Content Through 2031

On the same day the stock slid, Deutsche Telekom confirmed it had renewed its exclusive media rights to Germany's 3. Liga. The agreement with the German Football Association (DFB) runs through the 2030/31 season and covers all 380 matches per campaign plus the relegation playoffs. For the company, the extension delivers long-term planning certainty around a media asset — a different matter entirely from the mobile competition questions raised by Reuters.

Investors weighing the equity should keep those two threads apart. The football deal secures existing content; it says nothing about how satellite entrants might reshape mobile economics.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

Fiber Buildout in Concrete Numbers

Progress on the ground was equally tangible. In Baden-Württemberg, roughly 1.8 million households and businesses can now sign up for a Telekom fiber tariff, and fiber has been built or is under construction in 833 of 1,101 municipalities. Those figures describe availability and construction progress, not signed customer contracts. In Munich, Telekom, SWM and M-net reported joint FTTH advances on Wednesday.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, the company announced orders from the real estate industry and project developers covering seven million residential units, with an additional EUR 800 million earmarked for buildout over the next three years. These are concrete operational activities running alongside the satellite debate — though the orders alone do not translate into additional profit.

Goldman Trims Its Target, Keeps Its Rating

Analyst sentiment offered a mixed signal. Goldman Sachs lowered its price target on Deutsche Telekom on Monday from EUR 40 to EUR 38 while leaving its buy recommendation intact — a nuanced stance that cuts the valuation mark without changing the fundamental call.

A second valuation input arrived the same day at the company's AI investor day. Management expects roughly EUR 2.5 billion in indirect cost savings from AI and automation by 2030, measured against a 2023 baseline. That is a projection, not money already banked.

The AI revenue story carries its own yardstick. At the Bonn investor day on October 5, Deutsche Telekom projected around EUR 250 million in AI-related enterprise revenue outside the US for 2026, rising to roughly EUR 800 million by 2030. Both figures describe an ambition rather than achieved sales — and the 2026 number now stands as the next concrete checkpoint. Confirmation of that target would lend credibility to the longer-term goal; a simple restatement of the ambition would carry less weight.

A Pre-SpaceX Endorsement and a Completed Buyback

Not every analyst note was written in the shadow of the SpaceX news. UBS kept Deutsche Telekom at "Buy" with a EUR 35.10 price target on Wednesday, following the capital markets day — a call that predates Thursday's SpaceX announcement and therefore cannot be read as a reaction to it.

Deutsche Telekom at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The company's share buyback also belongs in the ledger. Between August 10 and October 2 inclusive, Telekom repurchased 21,018,668 of its own shares. That is a completed capital measure, documented and done — but it offers no shield against fresh competitive threats. In a favorable scenario, operational progress and buybacks complement each other; the latter cannot substitute for the former.

Two Uncertainties, Not One

What investors face is a double-sided unknown. The competitive pressure from satellite mobile is not yet visible as a concrete business effect, while the projected AI revenue has yet to be delivered. Anyone reading the share price drop as the whole argument misses that open operational calculus.

The bull case holds as long as the AI revenue outlook stands and US competition fears do not harden into measurable negative business effects. Should the growth plans wobble, or the competitive threat crystallize, the skeptical reading gains ground. The two themes occupy different geographies and cannot be netted against each other directly — which is why the investment decision ultimately rests on verifiable business disclosures: execution on the AI plans, and the actual consequences of potential additional US competition. Only those developments can show whether the growth initiative forms a durable counterweight to the new uncertainty.
