Deutsche Telekom Downgraded by Bernstein as AI Push Reshapes Customer Service

Bernstein downgraded Deutsche Telekom to Market Perform, citing fierce German broadband competition and doubts over US merger synergies.

Bernstein has stripped Deutsche Telekom of its "Outperform" rating, cutting the Bonn-based carrier to "Market Perform" on mounting competitive pressure in its home market and skepticism over the payoff from any future US deal. The stock was trading at EUR 26.89 at the time of the call.

Home-Market Headwinds and Doubts Over US Synergies

At the heart of Bernstein's more cautious stance is the fierce battle in German fixed-line broadband. The analysts also moved to temper expectations at group level, arguing that a merger with T-Mobile US would deliver only limited industrial synergies, according to Bloomberg News.

Within European telecoms, Bernstein sees better opportunities elsewhere. The UK's BT Group carries the house's buy recommendation as its sector favorite, while Elisa and Telia were both tagged "Underweight." Tele2 was trimmed to "Market Perform" in the same sweep. The downgrade marks a reversal from the prior month, when a majority of banks still rated the T-shares positively.

AI Agents to Replace Automated Phone Menus

Operationally, Deutsche Telekom is pressing ahead with artificial intelligence across its service operations. Chief AI Officer Kartik Sheth used yesterday's HumanX conference in Amsterdam to announce that the company's traditional automated phone menus will give way to interactive AI agents.

The shift replaces rigid voice menus with conversational assistants, letting callers state their business directly rather than navigating a tree of numbered options. Management expects the change to lift efficiency, lower the cost of each customer contact and shorten waiting times.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

The stock held steady around the announcement, closing Thursday with a modest 0.5% gain at EUR 27.00. Even so, the shares remain roughly 21% below their 52-week high of EUR 34.35.

Retail Overhaul and a Growing Digital Portfolio

Customer-facing changes extend beyond the phone line. The company unveiled an expanded distribution strategy yesterday, built around new flexible shop formats designed to reinforce in-person advice and local presence.

Elsewhere in the group, T-Systems Austria has teamed up with young AI startup fonio to bring AI-powered telephone agents to business customers in Austria. The systems plug into existing customer management and ERP software, and according to the partner, a meaningful share of routine calls can be automated while more complex matters stay with human staff.

Deutsche Telekom IoT broadened its multi-orbit roaming portfolio in mid-September, integrating Iridium's low-Earth-orbit satellite network to deliver worldwide data connectivity for 5G devices — a proposition aimed at industrial and logistics clients needing coverage beyond terrestrial networks. On the consumer side, the launch of T-Travel introduced a provider-neutral eSIM platform for mobile data spanning more than 200 destinations, and a new calculator for device CO? footprints addresses tightening sustainability demands in hardware.

Buybacks and Capital Allocation

Heavy shareholder returns continue to underpin the stock. The buyback program was raised by EUR 3 billion in August to a total volume of up to EUR 5 billion. Between August 10 and mid-September, the company repurchased more than 14 million of its own shares under the measure. According to Reuters Breakingviews, acquisitions inside the European Union represent the most promising route for any future takeovers.

Chart Picture

The cautious signals are visible in the price action. At EUR 26.89, the stock sits 6.2% below its 200-day moving average of EUR 28.66.

Despite the recent consolidation, Deutsche Telekom remains a heavyweight anchor of Germany's benchmark index. For investors, the coming months hinge on how the company counters persistent margin pressure in its legacy fixed-line business — and whether the new sales initiatives gain traction quickly.
