Deutsche Telekom Adds Exein IoT Security Tie-Up as Munich Fiber Rollout Advances

Deutsche Telekom IoT and cybersecurity specialist Exein unveiled a strategic partnership today aimed at embedding integrated security features into connected devices across the group's Internet of Things ecosystem. Neither party disclosed the financial terms of the arrangement. The announcement coincided with a modest lift in the Bonn-based carrier's share price, which closed up 1.6% at EUR 26.87.
That gain came without a single company-specific catalyst, and it followed a separate trading session in which the stock rose 2.1% to EUR 26.99.
Fiber Push Extends From Munich to the Ruhr
On the infrastructure front, the group reported headway in its FTTH joint venture in Bavaria's capital alongside municipal utility Stadtwerke München and telecom provider M-net. Several tens of thousands of residential and commercial units have already been connected under the project, with five additional build-out clusters slated to follow on January 1, 2027 as the network is expanded in stages.
The Munich work sits within a broader run of network moves. On October 2, Deutsche Telekom agreed to acquire the fiber networks of ruhrfibre Essen and Metrofibre through an asset deal, picking up infrastructure that reaches roughly 87,000 households in the Essen city area and deepening its footprint in the Ruhr metropolitan region.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?
Over the next three years, the company intends to channel a further EUR 800 million into its fiber network. Housing companies, property managers and project developers have already commissioned build-outs covering a total of seven million residential units.
AI Savings Target Anchored at EUR 2.5 Billion
Efficiency remains the other pillar of the strategy. At its AI Investor Day, management put the target for savings on indirect costs at around EUR 2.5 billion by 2030, measured against a 2023 baseline, driven by heavier use of artificial intelligence and automated processes. Existing medium-term targets and the financial forecast were left unchanged.
Beyond cost-cutting, the group is banking on commercial AI applications. Outside the United States, it is targeting roughly EUR 800 million in AI-related revenue from enterprise customers by 2030, with about EUR 250 million expected in the 2026 financial year.
The plans drew a favorable reception on the capital markets. According to media reports, Deutsche Bank reaffirmed its buy rating on the Bonn group on Tuesday with a price target of EUR 40.00. Goldman Sachs had already reiterated its own buy recommendation on Monday, though it trimmed its target to EUR 38.00 from EUR 40.00, with analysts highlighting the raised cost-reduction goals as a positive.
Buyback Rolls On Ahead of November Update
Market transactions have accompanied the operational news. Under its repurchase program, the company bought back 3,720,584 of its own shares between September 28 and October 2 inclusive. Since the program began on August 10 through October 2, the total has reached 21,018,668 shares.
Investors now turn to November 5, 2026, when Deutsche Telekom will publish its full third-quarter 2026 results. The interim report should shed light on how the fiber investments and efficiency programs are feeding through into the operating metrics of the individual segments.
