The gap between a company's fundamentals and its share price rarely gets wider than it has for DeFi Technologies this year. The Canadian crypto asset manager closed Friday at €0.4132, up 5.95 percent on the day and 15.94 percent higher on the week, yet the stock still sits 81.00 percent below its level of twelve months ago and 36.33 percent in the red since January 1. Against the 200-day moving average, the discount remains a stark 39.99 percent — a reminder that a single week of buying does little to dent a long-term downtrend.

That contradiction is precisely what makes the next fortnight so consequential. On Thursday, August 13, after the close of trading, the company releases its second-quarter 2026 results, followed by an investor call on Friday, August 14 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time. The numbers will land with just over two weeks to spare before a September 1 deadline set by the Nasdaq, which requires the stock to close at or above one US dollar for ten consecutive trading sessions.

A CEO's Unusual Admission

Chief executive Johan Wattenström has already gone public with his concerns. In a shareholder letter issued in late July, he acknowledged the management team takes the share price decline "very seriously" and attributed the slide not to company-specific problems but to a combination of a weak crypto market, altcoin softness, sector rotation out of crypto equities, and technical capital factors. It was a candid assessment that underscored how even profitable players in this space find themselves at the mercy of sentiment rather than their own results.

Wattenström also addressed the Nasdaq compliance issue directly. A reverse stock split remains off the table for now, he said, but shareholders have authorized the board to pursue one if needed — 73 percent of votes cast backed the measure. The CEO framed it as insurance rather than intent, a safety net rather than a plan.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DeFi Technologies?

The Bull Case Hinges on Momentum

The operating picture offers genuine reasons for optimism. In the first quarter of 2026, DeFi Technologies generated revenue of US$11.2 million and net income of US$4.9 million, with operating costs of US$11.4 million. Management describes the balance sheet at quarter-end as "fortress-like," with roughly US$150 million in assets and virtually no debt — a dramatic reversal from the 2022/2023 bear market, when more than US$40 million in borrowings weighed on the books.

The subsidiary structure adds texture to those headline figures. Core unit Valour contributed US$3.3 million in management, staking and lending fees against average assets under management of US$533.6 million, while trading arm Stillman Digital booked US$2.9 million in trading commissions. Stillman is reportedly on track for a record revenue year.

Beyond the existing businesses, management has sketched out a pipeline of new initiatives for the second half: a first hedge fund slated to launch shortly, arbitrage strategies due to scale, the Valour Custody platform heading toward rollout, and AI-related investment products in development. There is also work on a UCITS framework in a European Union country other than Sweden, after the Swedish Finansinspektionen rejected a local structure — a regulatory detour that buys flexibility but costs time.

If the second-quarter figures confirm the trajectory from Q1, the recent share price recovery could gain credibility. If they disappoint, the narrative shifts quickly.

The Bear Case Is Equally Real

The risks are not hard to enumerate. The 81.00 percent annual decline speaks to how deeply investor trust has been eroded, and the stock's well-documented correlation with crypto prices and assets under management means a renewed downturn in digital assets would likely overwhelm any progress from new business lines. The Nasdaq deadline, meanwhile, ticks forward regardless of operational performance — a mechanical risk that good numbers alone cannot dissolve.

Analyst sentiment has cooled accordingly, though both ratings remain positive. Benchmark cut its price target to C$2 from C$3, and B. Riley trimmed to C$0.90 from C$1.00, with both houses maintaining buy recommendations. Those revisions date back to late June, however, and may not fully reflect current conditions.

DeFi Technologies at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Governance Moves and What to Watch

On the corporate governance front, the company has been tidying up. The July annual meeting saw broad shareholder backing for the board, auditors and management changes, and a new advance notice bylaw has tightened internal rules. These steps do not move share prices, but they suggest a management team preparing the stage carefully for the reporting season.

Investors tuning into the August 14 call will be looking for two things: whether the Q1 operational trend has continued, and whether the new business lines outlined in the shareholder letter have begun leaving traces in the financials. The question beneath both is whether a fortress balance sheet is enough to sit out a sector rotation that, by the CEO's own admission, has little to do with the company itself.

The answer starts arriving after the bell on August 13. The Nasdaq clock, however, keeps running regardless.
