The arithmetic is jarring. DeFi Technologies booked a net profit of $4.9 million in its toughest quarter of the recent crypto downturn, yet its share price has shed roughly 85 percent over the past twelve months. On Friday, the stock closed at EUR 0.3660, down 1.67 percent on the day, leaving the year-to-date loss at 43.61 percent and the one-year decline at 84.69 percent. From the August 2025 high of EUR 2.45, the shares now sit 85.06 percent lower.

CEO Johan Wattenström has finally addressed the carnage. In a detailed shareholder letter, he attributes the slide to three factors: a weak crypto market, sector rotation away from crypto-exposed equities, and one-off technical effects tied to the company's recent capital raise. He is adamant that this cycle bears little resemblance to the 2022 bear market — the firm posted record revenue and record profit for fiscal 2025, and entered the second quarter of 2026 with roughly $150 million in liquidity and virtually no debt.

The Chart Still Has a Lot to Prove

Technically, the stock remains firmly in a downtrend. The 50-day moving average sits at EUR 0.4526, more than 19 percent above the current price, while the 200-day average of EUR 0.7190 looms a staggering 49 percent higher. A stock trading that far beneath both trendlines has yet to demonstrate anything close to a durable bottom.

That said, the pace of decline is visibly decelerating. The 52-week low of EUR 0.3408 was marked just over a week ago, on July 24, and the shares have since moved 7.39 percent off that floor. More tellingly, the seven-day performance has flipped to a gain of 5.60 percent — the first meaningful counter-move after weeks of unrelenting selling. The RSI, at 40.3, has climbed out of oversold territory, though it remains on the weaker side of neutral. With 30-day annualized volatility running at 72.32 percent, this remains a high-risk name where violent swings in either direction are par for the course.

The Business Tells a Different Story

What separates this sell-off from a pure momentum collapse is the underlying operation. During the most punishing stretch of the crypto downturn, when asset prices touched their cyclical lows, DeFi Technologies generated $11.2 million in revenue and a $4.9 million net profit. Management describes the balance sheet as a "fortress" — language that, on these numbers, reads as more than corporate spin.

The diversification explains the resilience. Valour, the asset management arm, oversaw CAD 530 million in assets as of the Q1 2026 earnings call, contributing $3.3 million in fees, staking, and lending income. Stillman Digital, the trading arm, added another $2.9 million in trading commissions. That spread across asset management, trading, and capital markets infrastructure is precisely why the company remains profitable even with token prices in the dumps. For value-oriented investors, the disconnect between operating reality and share price performance is becoming harder to ignore.

One Overhang Cleared, Others Emerge

The annual general meeting has removed a lingering source of volatility. Shareholders ratified the board, auditors, and proposed governance changes, eliminating the uncertainty that had weighed on the stock during the voting period. The same meeting saw 73 percent of shareholders approve a potential share consolidation — though management has stressed there are currently no plans for a reverse split, and would only pursue one if Nasdaq listing requirements made it unavoidable.

The path forward includes several catalysts. The company's first proprietary hedge fund is slated to launch "very soon," alongside an expansion of internal arbitrage strategies. Valour's custody platform remains on track for a second-half debut. There was, however, a setback in Sweden, where the financial regulator rejected a UCITS structure for crypto assets. DeFi Technologies has filed an appeal and is simultaneously building out its UCITS infrastructure in other EU jurisdictions to keep its ETP product expansion on track.

A Stock Searching for a Floor

The second-quarter 2026 results, due in August, will offer the next test of whether the record 2025 performance can hold up in a difficult market. For now, the chart demands caution — a stock trading nearly 50 percent beneath its 200-day average has not proven its floor. But the combination of a fresh 52-week low followed by a positive seven-day turn, an RSI emerging from oversold conditions, and a business that stays profitable even at the cyclical trough argues against a continued panic.

This looks less like a falling knife than a stock in the process of finding its footing. Investors with the stomach for extreme volatility will find a setup with genuine optionality — though a truly constructive read will only emerge once the 50-day moving average itself begins to turn higher.
