DeFi Technologies: A 30-Day Rally That Contradicts the Analyst Playbook
Published on 08/27/2026 at 15:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deThe stock market rarely rewards companies that miss revenue estimates by 41% and post a net loss of $15.1 million. DeFi Technologies is testing that assumption.
Shares of the crypto-focused financial firm have climbed roughly 30% over the past month, with a 14% surge in just seven days, even as a parade of Wall Street firms cut price targets and downgraded their ratings. On Thursday, the stock traded at €0.5100, up 1.7% on the day, following a 15.71% jump on August 21 and a 4.71% pullback on August 26 — a volatility profile that has become the defining feature of this name.
The disconnect between the earnings reality and the share price performance tells a more nuanced story than either the bears or the bulls might admit.
The Numbers That Spooked the Street
The second-quarter report released in August laid bare the challenges. Revenue came in at $7.8 million, down sharply from $13.1 million in the same period last year. The company recorded an operating loss of $2.3 million, while the net loss reached $15.1 million — a figure that includes $16.3 million in unrealized write-downs on private investments. Those are paper losses rather than cash outflows, but they still weigh on the balance sheet.
Operational cash burn added another layer of concern: $18.1 million consumed in the first half of the year. Management has pointed to the company's liquidity buffer — roughly $135 million in cash, stablecoins, and digital assets as of June 30, or about CAD 119.8 million — as evidence of resilience. But the erosion of the core business is harder to spin.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying DeFi Technologies?
A Cascade of Downgrades
The analyst response was swift and mostly negative. Maxim Group's M. Galinko cut his fiscal 2026 earnings estimate on August 19 to a loss of $0.05 per share from a previously expected loss of $0.03, while maintaining a "Hold" rating. The firm had downgraded the stock from "Buy" days earlier. Wall Street Zen had already moved to "Strong Sell" on August 15, and Weiss Ratings followed with a "Sell" on August 21.
Price targets tumbled across the board: B. Riley slashed its target to $0.62 from $0.90, Northland Securities cut to $1.25 from $1.75, and Benchmark Co. lowered to $1.00 from $2.00 — though Benchmark kept its Buy recommendation intact. The consensus target across eleven Wall Street firms sits at $1.57, a figure that predates the latest round of cuts and will likely drift lower.
Two Businesses, Two Trajectories
Beneath the headline numbers, DeFi Technologies is really two companies moving in opposite directions.
The asset management arm, Valour Inc., is losing momentum. Assets under management fell to CAD 397.2 million at quarter-end from an average of CAD 471.5 million, with management fees halving year over year and staking yields compressing to 2.4%. Management attributes the decline primarily to falling crypto prices and points to net inflows of CAD 22.8 million as evidence of sustained demand. Valour still generated $3 million in combined management, staking, and lending revenue for the quarter.
The trading subsidiary, Stillman Digital, tells a different story. It booked $2.5 million in trading commissions during the quarter, contributing to first-half revenue growth of 30.2% year over year, or CAD 5.4 million. The unit now accounts for roughly 30% of platform revenue. In a volatile crypto market, trading desks tend to thrive — and that may be the real bet underneath the recent share price action.
Reading the Rally
Why would investors push the stock higher amid a wave of negative revisions? The most plausible explanation is that the downgrades were already priced in before they hit the tape. The market had seen the quarterly numbers, digested the write-downs, and concluded that the worst of the bad news was behind.
The stock's 200-day moving average tells a cautionary tale, however: shares remain 20% below that benchmark despite the recent surge. The distance to the 52-week high of €2.31 stands at 78%, a reminder of how far the stock has fallen and how much ground a recovery would need to cover.
With 30-day annualized volatility running at 101%, this remains a stock for investors with strong stomachs. The question that will drive the share price in the coming months is whether the liquidity cushion — roughly $135 million — can bridge the gap until crypto prices and trading volumes turn back up in tandem. For now, the market seems willing to give the company the benefit of the doubt, even as the analysts sharpen their pencils.
