D-Wave Quantum Wins $100M Federal Backing as Advantage2 Processor Moves Into Pentagon Logistics

D-Wave Quantum is threading two needles at once: converting government interest into hard contracts while persuading commercial customers that quantum optimization is ready for daily industrial use. The Burnaby-based company's shares ended Friday at EUR 15.29, down 33% since the start of the year — a reminder that the market remains unconvinced by a story built on pilots, partnerships and promises.

The most concrete piece of that story landed Friday, when the Defense Logistics Agency, working alongside CGI Federal and the University of Tennessee, unveiled the "Quantum Pathfinder" research initiative. At its core sits D-Wave's Advantage2 processor, which will be paired with the company's hybrid solvers to tackle inventory management, stock distribution and reverse logistics in demanding military operating environments. The scope extends beyond the armed forces: civilian supply chains in transportation and retail fall under the same collaboration. Lorenzo Martinelli, D-Wave's Chief Revenue Officer, pointed to the combined systems' innovation potential, noting they also open interfaces to generative artificial intelligence.

Federal Funding and a CGI Channel

That defense-facing work rests on a parallel track of government support. Under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, D-Wave has secured access to as much as $100 million in federal funding to accelerate quantum computing development, an arrangement that hands Washington a minority equity stake without control rights. The deal bolsters the balance sheet for coming development phases.

On the sales side, the company is leaning on established IT service providers to reach factory floors. A strategic partnership with CGI calls for integrating the Advantage2 machine and hybrid solvers into CGI's own service portfolio, with the operational focus on complex optimization problems in logistics, transport, rail traffic and retail.

Bookings Climb, Costs Bite

Commercial traction is real, if early. First-half bookings reached $35.5 million, against just $2.9 million in the year-earlier period. The swelling pipeline of pilot projects and strategic alliances captures an industry shifting from purely academic research toward application-driven scenarios. Yet converting that momentum into recurring revenue remains the central hurdle for specialized hardware developers, since many contracts at this stage are still structured as project-based research agreements.

The headline growth figures also lay bare the capital-intensive nature of the business. Heavy spending on research, system architecture and a worldwide sales push continues to weigh substantially on profitability.

Dual Platform Strategy and Board Changes

On the technology front, D-Wave is keeping a foot in both camps. The company appeared as a platinum sponsor at the Quantum World Congress in College Park, Maryland, showcasing both its annealing and gate-model platforms. Roughly a week earlier, it announced its Qubits Asia 2026 user conference, scheduled for October 28 in Seoul, with a program centered on production applications and concrete research projects in the Asian market.

Those operational moves have been flanked by personnel adjustments at the top. According to a mandatory filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission dated September 18, the company appointed Bernard Gavgani as an independent Class II director to its board. Gavgani also takes a seat on the board's cybersecurity committee.

What Comes Next

Embedding itself in government programs and defense-related supply chains gives D-Wave a testing ground outside the purely commercial sector — a cushion as it works to prove that quantum optimization can graduate from demonstration to deployment. In the months ahead, the project partners intend to finalize concrete use cases for the logistics agency, with a decision on widening the practical trials expected in the next fiscal year.
