D-Wave Quantum's Oilfield Trials and Italian Hardware Win Cut Little Ice With a Market Fixated on a Revenue Miss
Published on 10/18/2026 at 21:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deA 4,400-qubit machine has just landed in Como and a Minnesota foundry deal has been extended, but neither has done much to lift a stock that has lost 70% of its value in twelve months.
D-Wave Quantum shares closed Friday at EUR 10.49, down 8.2% on the session, as a broad retreat from technology names swept the sector. The selloff was driven by doubts over the durability of artificial intelligence spending, as reported by AP, while Reuters pointed to skepticism about how AI infrastructure will be financed and to rising oil prices that further soured the mood. Growth-oriented tech firms bore the brunt, and D-Wave was no exception.
The Friday slide caps a bruising run. Since the start of the year the stock is down 54%, and over a twelve-month horizon the decline reaches 70%. Beyond the macro backdrop, investors have grown wary of capital-intensive business models — a category into which quantum computing fits squarely.
Class Action Follows a Quarterly Shortfall
Legal trouble has added to the pressure. Several law firms have announced securities class actions against D-Wave, with a complaint filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The suit names the company and certain members of its leadership and alleges violations of federal securities law.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?
Faruqi & Faruqi has flagged a deadline for affected investors seeking lead-plaintiff status. The firm's stated cut-off is 15 December 2026, for shareholders who bought D-Wave stock between late February and late August 2026. The claims allege management overstated business and financial prospects. The allegations have not been tested or confirmed in court, and no report has drawn a causal link between the litigation and the recent share-price moves.
What set off the wave of suits was the second-quarter 2026 report on 6 August. Revenue of USD 3.08 million fell well short of analyst estimates above USD 4 million, and the year-on-year decline stung. At the end of August the company announced its finance chief would step down, adding further selling pressure.
Oil Majors Put Hybrid Systems to Work
Away from the courtroom, the commercial story is advancing. Saudi Aramco, bp and Eni have spent two years testing hybrid computing systems from Quantinuum and D-Wave inside their workflows, part of a push by multinationals to rein in the enormous cost of exploration. The technology is deployed for seismic migration, well-pad optimization and reservoir monitoring, with partners aiming to compress geophysical data processing from months into days. Sharper imaging is meant to head off costly dry holes — a single deepwater exploration well can run above USD 100 million. Because today's quantum processors remain limited and error-prone, they handle only selected compute-heavy subtasks within the hybrid architecture.
Como Installation and a Foundry Extension
Closer to home, D-Wave's own hardware rollout continues. On Thursday the Advantage2 annealing system, with more than 4,400 qubits, arrived at its deployment site in Como, where it will be installed at Villa Saporiti. The placement is funded by Swiss Quantum Technology SA under an agreement worth EUR 10 million in total; the partner has secured half of the system's capacity for five years and holds a purchase option on the entire machine.
Two days earlier, D-Wave and contract manufacturer SkyWater Technology disclosed a multi-year extension of their collaboration. The arrangement covers the development of specialized semiconductor processes and production for D-Wave's superconducting quantum technology roadmap at the Minnesota fabrication site.
Operational risks and a broader pullback from technology stocks still dominate sentiment. For now, qubit milestones and oilfield pilots are struggling to outweigh the balance-sheet and legal overhang.
