D-Wave Quantum's Commercial Rollout Speaks Louder Than the Tape

A nationwide production deployment for Japan's largest mobile operator, a freshly extended foundry pact and a 4,400-qubit machine bound for northern Italy — on paper, that is a quarter most hardware companies would happily take. D-Wave Quantum's share price told a different story on Friday, sliding 8.2% to close at EUR 10.49 as a sector-wide retreat and a new securities complaint in California overwhelmed the operational news.

The trigger for the broader selloff came from a rival. IonQ's announcement that it will absorb the cybersecurity firm Elisity in an all-stock deal worth up to $1.3 billion set off industry-wide anxiety about dilution, stretched valuations and heavy capital needs, according to media reports. The read-across hit the whole quantum complex, and D-Wave — already nursing months of shareholder frustration — was in no position to shrug it off.

A complaint in California, and a routine share withholding

Legal trouble added to the gloom. A securities class action was filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against D-Wave and several executives, alleging false or misleading statements about the company's business and financial prospects between February 26 and August 25, 2026. Those are allegations only; no court has established any of them as fact. Still, in a jittery market, the mere filing of such a suit can sharpen doubts that were already building.

A separate disclosure showed that 52,320 common shares were withheld from CEO Alan E. Baratz on Thursday to cover tax obligations tied to vesting restricted stock units. That is a standard administrative step, but in a fragile tape, filings of this kind tend to feed the psychological pressure to sell.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

What the order book actually shows

Against that backdrop, the operational record is worth examining on its own terms. NTT DOCOMO's second production application built on D-Wave systems is now live across Japan. In a network segment covering 333 base stations, the optimization workload cut peak location-registration signals by 65.3%, while peak paging signals fell 7%.

Those are concrete industrial efficiency gains, not laboratory projections. While much of the market debates theoretical roadmaps, D-Wave is producing measurable results from a large-scale commercial network — the kind of operational proof that ultimately determines what a technology vendor is worth.

Supply-chain continuity got a boost on Tuesday, when D-Wave and SkyWater Technology signed a multi-year agreement to continue their joint process development and manufacturing of semiconductors for superconducting quantum systems. SkyWater will develop and produce specialized chip processes supporting D-Wave's superconducting processors. Neither partner disclosed financial terms.

Hardware headed for Como

The company's physical footprint in Europe is expanding on schedule as well. An Advantage2 system with more than 4,400 qubits has been shipped to Europe and will be installed at Villa Saporiti in Como, Italy. Swiss Quantum Technology SA is funding the project within the Q-Alliance ecosystem.

Friday's close leaves the stock just above its 52-week low of EUR 10.13. Worries about financing and litigation risk are understandable, and the fear of dilution from expensive acquisitions — the model IonQ is demonstrating — is weighing on the entire sector. Yet the market's reaction looks undiscriminating: D-Wave is booking real customer implementations with the likes of NTT DOCOMO while locking down reliable manufacturing capacity. Once the sector-wide agitation subsides, the fundamental substance has a strong case for asserting itself.
