Quantum computing stocks took a hit on Tuesday as rising US Treasury yields sapped appetite for richly valued technology names, and D-Wave Quantum was not spared the broader pullback. No sector-specific catalyst drove the selling, according to media reports — the move tracked the wider macro current that has made capital-intensive growth plays a harder sell.

The shares are changing hands at EUR 14.45 in today's session, a modest 0.4% decline on the day, and sit 36% lower since the start of the year. Tuesday's close came in at EUR 14.51. Measured against their 52-week high, the shares remain 64% adrift, a gap that tells its own story about how far sentiment has traveled from the stock's earlier peaks.

A Legal Review Lands in the Middle of a Transition

The unease has a concrete backstory. Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check has launched an investigation into possible securities law violations, focusing on missed revenue expectations in the second quarter of 2026 and the abrupt departure of the previous finance chief. The probe is a law firm's initiative — not a regulatory ruling, and not proof that any wrongdoing occurred — but its timing lands awkwardly for a company already navigating a delicate handover.

Filling the gap at the finance desk is Greg Golkov, who is serving as acting Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President Finance. A mandatory SEC filing laid out the terms of his appointment: a monthly responsibility allowance of USD 5,500, a one-time grant of Restricted Stock Units valued at USD 550,000 at the time of award, and a contractual arrangement providing for a potential completion bonus of USD 67,000.

A separate September 22 amendment to Form 8-K disclosed further details of Golkov's compensation package, including stock-based remuneration covering 27,081 shares. Another filing put his initial beneficial ownership following the appointment at 400,923 common shares plus unvested units. The price of temporary stability at the top is not cheap — and investors rarely build confidence on arrangements that read as provisional.

Partnerships and a Boardroom Upgrade

Against that unsettled backdrop, the commercial side of the business has been anything but idle. Roughly a week ago, D-Wave announced a strategic partnership with IT consultancy CGI to push quantum computing deeper into industry, targeting practical applications in logistics, transport and retail. The tie-up, which builds on more than a year of prior collaboration, aims to embed systems such as Advantage2 and hybrid solvers directly into the IT giant's service offerings.

Almost simultaneously, the board was strengthened with the appointment of Bernard Gavgani, a senior technology advisor and former Group CIO of BNP Paribas, who joined the Board of Directors and the Cybersecurity Committee. Gavgani brings a background in technology strategy and IT security to the governing body — a notable addition for a company whose commercial credibility increasingly depends on enterprise-grade trust.

Seoul Sets the Next Milestone

Attention now turns to next month, when D-Wave hosts its Qubits Asia 2026 user conference in Seoul on October 28. The company intends to present fresh insights into its technology and showcase real-world projects, a stage that will test whether its commercial narrative can finally translate into a market response.

For now, the equation does not quite add up for shareholders. The technological positioning and heavyweight partners like CGI demonstrate that quantum optimization is gaining industrial relevance, yet the stock has failed to react durably to any of the good news. Until the finance function is put on a permanent footing and quarterly targets are met reliably, the internal turbulence looks set to keep overshadowing the technological promise.
