D-Wave Quantum: NTT DOCOMO Cuts Network Signals by 65% as Boardroom Gets a Corporate Makeover

D-Wave adds BNP Paribas and Carbon Robotics executives to its board as NTT DOCOMO deploys a second quantum app, but shares fall 33% year to date.

For years, quantum computing lived in a comfortable limbo on global financial markets: revolutionary on paper, commercially distant in practice. University research grants, academic lab setups and glossy future promises shaped how the entire sector was perceived. D-Wave Quantum is now showing what it looks like when that early phase starts to fade — and the market is not entirely convinced by the view.

The clearest signal of this maturation sits in the company's governance. On September 21, D-Wave appointed Bernard Gavgani to its Board of Directors and Cybersecurity Committee. Gavgani serves as Senior Advisor for Technology and Innovation to the BNP Paribas Group Executive Management, bringing expertise in global technology strategy, AI governance, cybersecurity and operational transformation. His arrival follows the August 17 addition of Kevan P. Krysler, CFO of Carbon Robotics, to the Board of Directors and Audit Committee. Krysler carries broad leadership experience in finance and corporate governance at both listed and private technology companies.

Profiles like these are not assembled for the next academic conference. They point toward the demands of large institutional customers, strict security reviews and robust control structures — the unglamorous machinery of enterprise sales.

Quantum Logic Meets Mobile Networks

Evidence that this professionalization is translating into day-to-day business comes from Japan. Telecommunications group NTT DOCOMO launched its second production quantum application built on D-Wave systems on August 18. The results are concrete: the application cut location registration signals during daily peak load by 65.3% and reduced paging signals by 7.0%.

That is a measurable relief in live mobile networks rather than a theoretical benchmark under lab conditions. The company is also shoring up its technological base and market access. A funding agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce provides up to $100 million from the CHIPS and Science Act, directed at research and development of superconducting annealing and gate-model technologies. A strategic partnership with CGI adds the Advantage2 quantum computer and hybrid optimization tools to the service portfolio for corporate clients.

The Market's Sober Verdict

Despite these steps toward industrial anchoring, the trading floor remains cautious. The stock closed Friday at EUR 15.29, down 33% since the start of the year. That skepticism has a logic of its own: at a market capitalization equivalent to EUR 5.83 billion, little room exists for disappointment. Market participants want hard numbers, not feasibility demonstrations.

The hard numbers, so far, are thin. Analyst Craig Ellis of B. Riley Securities reaffirmed his buy rating on Monday and kept his price target at $40, with his confidence resting mainly on the medium-term potential of the computing architecture. S&P Global Market Intelligence noted that bookings could rise sharply this year — but also flagged that second-quarter revenue stalled at $3.1 million, flat year over year and short of expectations.

That gap is the core tension running through the stock. Growing bookings are a necessary precondition for future success, yet the exchange increasingly demands proof that those contracts convert reliably into actual revenue. Partnerships with established IT service providers such as CGI, aimed at unlocking concrete optimization projects in logistics and retail, are sensible moves to strengthen governance and open doors to large corporate customers. Still, every personnel or organizational realignment remains a promise about the future as long as the operating leverage fails to materialize.

A Test of Patience

The stock also sits a considerable distance from its 52-week high of EUR 40.41, a retreat that illustrates how quickly speculative goodwill evaporates when hard metrics lag behind hopes. D-Wave now faces the task of proving that operational efficiency gains in network operations can be converted into recurring, scalable revenue across the board. For investors, the decisive phase has begun: the era of pure future hope is giving way to an industrial trial by fire — one that favors those with a strong appetite for risk and plenty of patience.
