D-Wave Quantum's shares extended their slide on Tuesday, dropping 2.6% to EUR 12.01 as a sector-wide selloff continued to pressure specialized quantum computing names. The decline follows Monday's 5.2% retreat to EUR 12.32, a move that had little to do with anything D-Wave itself reported.

A rival's acquisition, a sector's headache

The trigger came from competitor IonQ, which announced plans to acquire cybersecurity firm Elisity in an all-stock transaction valued at up to $1.3 billion. As CNBC reported, investor caution spread rapidly across the peer group, dragging down not only D-Wave but also rivals such as Rigetti.

Market participants tend to greet large, equity-financed takeovers in the tech sector with wariness. Worries about shareholder dilution and doubts over near-term monetization have soured sentiment across the quantum segment, where large-scale commercial deployments remain largely on the drawing board. When a heavyweight like IonQ has to dig deep into its own share reserve to fund an acquisition, it immediately raises questions about the capital needs of the entire industry — and the fear of diluted stakes follows naturally once growth is financed through fresh share issuance. Media coverage of IonQ's move has raised broader questions about how quantum companies are valued and how much funding they actually require.

D-Wave's inclusion in that fallout is psychologically understandable, though factually it deserves a more nuanced look. It mainly illustrates how tightly intertwined sentiment remains across the technology sector.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

Building the ecosystem while the market looks elsewhere

Away from the sector mood, D-Wave Quantum is pressing ahead with its own development. On October 1, the company launched a beta program for its gate-model quantum computer simulator, giving selected commercial organizations and research institutions early access to test gate-based quantum algorithms.

Alongside that, the company is leaning on academic partnerships. Earlier this month, D-Wave agreed with the Supply Chain Management Research Center at the University of Arkansas to establish the Quantum Supply Chain Initiative Support Fund. The fund is designed to finance training programs and independent research focused squarely on the practical use of quantum applications in supply chain management. The beta simulator program similarly allows selected customers and research partners to trial error-detection-enabled programs before the solution becomes generally available.

Investors should keep in mind, however, that such development steps take time to translate into dependable revenue.

Back near the bottom of the range

The recent downward drift has brought the stock back toward the lower end of its trading range. At the current price, the shares sit just above their 52-week low of EUR 11.12, marked on March 30. The stock also trades at a roughly 70% discount to its 52-week high.

Monday's selloff made clear that short-term sector swings can spill over onto D-Wave at any moment, even when the company itself is operationally uninvolved. For shareholders, that amounts to an ongoing test of patience — anyone with exposure to the quantum space has to be able to stomach externally triggered turbulence.

What ultimately matters for a lasting recovery is not how competitors behave, but proof that D-Wave's own partnerships and technology simulators can generate viable commercial orders. Until that evidence materializes, the stock remains vulnerable to every weak patch in the sector.
