D-Wave Quantum Bets on Supply Chains and Seoul Stage as Valuation Doubts Linger

D-Wave launched a quantum supply chain research fund with the University of Arkansas as QBTS shares fell 1.2% and remain down 39% this year.

D-Wave Quantum is widening its push into logistics and defense research while preparing to host its flagship user conference in Asia next year, a twin offensive that lands as investors grow impatient for proof that quantum computing can generate recurring commercial revenue.

The Canadian quantum specialist used the CSCMP EDGE 2026 industry gathering to unveil a collaboration with the Supply Chain Management Research Center at the University of Arkansas. The partnership establishes a Quantum Supply Chain Initiative Support Fund, which will bankroll independent research, teaching programs and case studies across three priority fields: retail, transportation and national defense. Researchers intend to examine whether quantum algorithms can outpace classical methods in vehicle routing, logistics network control, inventory management and the allocation of scarce resources. A particular focus will fall on decision-making during acute supply disruptions.

Under the arrangement, D-Wave joins a partner program that already counts more than 25 industrial participants, giving the company a direct line to potential adopters in business and government. The move builds on a partnership announced roughly two weeks earlier with CGI Global covering transport and commerce solutions, and it sits alongside an agreement with the US Department of Commerce worth up to USD 100 million in funding through the CHIPS Act.

Wall Street Wants Receipts, Not Roadmaps

Market reaction to the Arkansas announcement was muted. D-Wave shares (NASDAQ: QBTS) slipped 1.2 percent to EUR 13.85 in the session, extending a bruising run that has wiped 39 percent off the stock since the start of the year. In German trading the equity was quoted at EUR 14.20, well below its 200-day moving average of EUR 17.91 — a gap that underscores the downward pressure the shares have faced for months.

The sector-wide retreat came to a head last Friday, when quantum stocks came under heavy selling pressure amid industry-wide questions about valuations and persistent uncertainty over how quickly commercial adoption will arrive. For D-Wave, that headwind is arriving at an awkward moment, just as the company works to broaden its technological reach.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying D-Wave Quantum?

At the heart of the debate is a single question: when will technological partnerships translate into durable, growing revenue? Quantum computing spent years as a pure future bet with very long development cycles. Investors now demand tangible evidence of value in day-to-day industrial operations. Tie-ups with IT service providers demonstrate that established corporations are paying attention, but the decisive test is whether customers will commit to recurring software and cloud spending. Should that transition stall, the strain between heavy research budgets and hesitant bookings could erode investor confidence for good.

Not everyone sees near-term upside in optimization. Helmut Katzgraber of investment firm 55North recently argued that classical computing systems are likely to retain the upper hand in optimization tasks for the foreseeable future, pointing instead to materials and chemistry simulation as the more promising near-term opportunity for quantum machines.

Simulator Beta and a Boardroom Coup

Supporters point to D-Wave's steady opening of its product suite to new user groups. The company launched a gate-model simulator that grants selected organizations from industry and academia early access to tools for fault-tolerant programming. Participants include BBVA, FirstQFM, Florida Atlantic University and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, with delivery running through the company's Leap cloud service and its Ocean SDK developer kit. The beta program, which began on a Thursday, lets testers work with applications built on Dual-Rail technology designed to detect errors at the hardware level.

The company also strengthened its leadership bench in technology and security. Bernard Gavgani, a technology and innovation adviser to the Group Executive Management of BNP Paribas and formerly the bank's CIO, joined the Board of Directors and the cybersecurity committee. That kind of network could accelerate acceptance of quantum architectures in finance and the corporate world — and if these initiatives convert into rising orders soon, a meaningful re-rating could follow.

Execution Milestones Now Set the Agenda

The bear case rests on institutional caution that shows no sign of lifting. Friday's selloff illustrated how sensitive the entire sector is to doubts about profitability; without fresh corporate deals, the downtrend in the share chart could harden. A key risk lies in the length of customer onboarding: many industrial firms are still testing quantum approaches in pilot projects without releasing long-term budgets. If the broader market climate for unprofitable growth companies tightens, capital could become scarce.

The stock's path now hinges on concrete operational milestones. As long as the current annual low of EUR 11.12 holds, the broader recovery scenario for the quote remains intact; a sustained break below that mark under heavy selling would likely invite follow-on selling. Investors already have their next date circled: on October 28, 2026, D-Wave will host the Qubits Asia 2026 user conference in Seoul, where customers are expected to present real-world deployment reports and new research findings. Those presentations will reveal just how far practical industrial use has actually progressed.
