Commerzbank: Three Verdicts, One Calendar Date, and a Takeover That Hasn't Happened Yet
Published on 10/17/2026 at 18:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deAnalysts covering Commerzbank have spent the past week confirming their positions rather than changing them, and the distinction matters. RBC Capital Markets lifted its price target to 41 euros from 40 on Tuesday while keeping its "Sector Perform" rating. Deutsche Bank Research reaffirmed "Hold" with a 42-euro target on Thursday. JPMorgan, for its part, stayed at "Neutral" with 39 euros. Not one of the three moved to a buy.
The shares closed at 37.56 euros yesterday, below all three targets. That gap is arithmetic, not a recommendation — a neutral rating carries no purchase signal regardless of how far the price sits from the mark.
A Date That Stands on Its Own
Commerzbank has scheduled publication of its third-quarter 2026 results for 5 November 2026. That date belongs to the operating story, not the ownership one. A regulatory clearance to build a stake says nothing about revenue, profit, or how the bank's core business is performing; a quarterly report, in turn, does not advance the outstanding steps toward a possible change of control. Investors holding the stock face two separate questions, and neither answers the other.
The cautious analyst framework in place ahead of that release is not a signal that a re-rating has already occurred. Confirming a rating is also not the same as cutting one — JPMorgan reduced neither its stance nor its target — but no fresh confidence can be read into the repetition either.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
Permission Is Not Control
The European Central Bank granted UniCredit approval on Thursday to push its holding past the 30% threshold and to raise it further without a cap. That clears a supervisory hurdle. It does not complete a takeover.
UniCredit's own guidance points to holding roughly 50% of voting rights and being in a position to take control around the turn of the year, once the remaining regulatory procedures conclude and conditions are satisfied. Those caveats are part of the company's expectation, not fine print to be skipped. Commerzbank declined to comment on the approval.
Keeping the sequence straight — permission granted, procedures pending, control possible — is what the stake story actually amounts to today. It remains relevant to the share price without being a finished state of affairs.

Buybacks Running Alongside
Commerzbank is meanwhile buying its own stock. A update published Monday put purchases between 4 September and 9 October inclusive at 11,114,083 shares.
Stack the three elements together and no single verdict emerges: the bank is repurchasing equity, the analysts are holding their neutral-to-middling ratings, and UniCredit's path to control still runs through unfinished process. None of that substitutes for the operating numbers. On 5 November, the business will have to speak for itself.
