Commerzbank's Record Profit Run Collides With a Costlier Fight for Deposits
Published on 11/05/2026 at 16:10 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank has trimmed its revenue ambition for next year's interest business, and the market wasted little time registering its displeasure. The stock was down between 2.2% and 2.8% on the day, a slide that says less about the bank's third-quarter earnings — which were strong — than about how investors are weighing the durability of its income base.
At the heart of the revision is the deposit war. The Frankfurt lender now expects net interest income of roughly EUR 8.5 billion for 2026, down from about EUR 8.6 billion previously, citing tougher competition for customer deposits. The cut is narrow, but it lands on the single line item that has done most of the heavy lifting for European banks in a higher-rate era.
Two Signals, One Share Price
What makes the update awkward is its internal tension. Commerzbank reaffirmed its net profit target of at least EUR 3.4 billion and stood by its overall revenue expectation of around EUR 13.2 billion for 2026. So the bank is simultaneously telling investors that one earnings stream will be thinner while insisting the full-year bottom line remains within reach.
For shareholders, that combination frames the debate. The lower interest forecast is not a profit warning — the group has not touched its headline guidance. The question is whether the deposit squeeze stays contained within the revised outlook or forces a broader rethink. A further deterioration would sharpen scrutiny of whether the EUR 3.4 billion promise still holds.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
The Quarter Itself Was Strong
Against that cautious forward view sits a genuinely robust set of numbers. Net profit for the third quarter of 2026 came in at EUR 859 million, up 45% year on year. Operating profit climbed 25% to EUR 1.312 billion, on revenues of EUR 3.199 billion.
The improvement was not confined to the bottom line. Commerzbank also reported its best nine-month result in its history, with net profit of EUR 2.7 billion for the first three quarters of 2026 — a gain of 41% over the prior year. That record offers a counterweight to the softer interest guidance, though it describes business already booked rather than the road ahead.
Beating Last Year Isn't the Same as Beating the Street
Growth alone, however, has not been enough to satisfy the market. According to Handelsblatt, both the quarterly profit and revenues came in slightly below analyst expectations. That means the share price reaction reflects more than the trimmed interest forecast; it also captures the quality of the results measured against what the market had pencilled in.
RBC analyst Anke Reingen, as reported by dpa-AFX, described the business trends as disappointing. Her assessment shifts the emphasis away from the year-on-year comparison: what matters is not simply whether Commerzbank earned more, but whether its trajectory clears the bar analysts had set.
What Would Change the Story
The bullish case rests on the deposit battle not forcing another downward revision and on the confirmed group targets holding firm. Under that scenario, today's adjustment looks like a limited step back within an otherwise positive earnings trend, and the share price dip would not signal any fundamental break in the profit path.
Commerzbank at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
The bearish case is equally concrete. If deposit competition persists and prompts further cuts, and if the confirmed profit target itself comes under pressure, a modest interest-income correction would widen into a broader earnings question. The latest quarter's gain could not refute that, since it reflects a period already closed.
Separately, additional approvals for the completion of UniCredit's takeover offer could act as an independent catalyst; they were still pending after the ECB had already given its green light. That procedural step, however, is distinct from the operating story. It does not answer the central question of whether Commerzbank can deliver on its profit pledge while fighting harder for deposits.
