Commerzbank's Capital Cushion Grows as Deposit Competition Bites Into Lending Income

ECB cuts Commerzbank's Pillar 2 requirement to 2.10% for 2027, but the bank trimmed its net interest income outlook on tougher deposit competition.

Commerzbank has won another slice of regulatory breathing room, but the relief arrives just as the Frankfurt lender concedes that deposit competition is chipping away at one of its core revenue streams. The European Central Bank will lower the bank's Pillar 2 additional own-funds requirement by 5 basis points to 2.10% for 2027, the company disclosed on 27 October. The bank described its buffer above the MDA threshold as comfortable.

The adjustment is modest in scale, yet it matters for a lender simultaneously defending profitability and funding a running share buyback. Whether the lighter capital load can offset pressure in the interest business is now the central question hanging over the equity.

A record nine months, with a softer rate outlook attached

The operating backdrop remains strong on paper. Across the first nine months of 2026, operating profit climbed 17% to EUR 4.037bn — the best nine-month result in the bank's history, management said. Net profit after tax and minorities rose 41% to EUR 2.7bn over the same stretch.

The third quarter alone delivered EUR 859m in net profit, up 45% year on year, while operating profit advanced 25% to EUR 1.3bn. Both figures fell just shy of analyst consensus, according to Reuters.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?

Alongside those numbers, Commerzbank reaffirmed its full-year target of at least EUR 3.4bn in net profit. It did, however, trim its net interest income expectation to roughly EUR 8.5bn from about EUR 8.6bn previously, citing fiercer competition for deposits. That revision is the pivot on which much of the sell-side commentary now turns.

Brokerages split on what the quarter deserves

The analyst response was mixed. DZ Bank cut the stock to "Hold" from "Buy" on Thursday, with analyst Philipp Häßler lowering his fair value to EUR 40 from EUR 46, according to media reports. He pointed to the interest income guidance and a lack of near-term catalysts, and flagged UniCredit as the dominant theme for investors.

Deutsche Bank Research took a different line on Friday, keeping "Hold" with a EUR 42 price target. Analyst Benjamin Goy called the quarter mixed: pre-provision profit and net profit disappointed, while fee income, costs and loan losses came in better than expected.

RBC also moved its target lower on Thursday, cutting to EUR 39 from EUR 41 while retaining a "Sector Perform" rating — a stance that fits a picture where strong historical earnings growth must be weighed against softer rate expectations.

Buyback momentum continues

Capital returns remain part of the story. In a capital markets disclosure dated 2 November, Commerzbank reported it had repurchased 21,268,730 of its own shares through 30 October inclusive. A steady earnings base would help sustain that program alongside the bank's capital adequacy.

Commerzbank at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next scheduled checkpoint for investors is the J.P. Morgan European Financials Conference in London on 20 November 2026, where management may shed light on how earnings momentum and capital headroom fit together. No new guidance has been announced for that appearance.

Further out, Commerzbank has slated 11 February 2027 for its annual results press conference and fourth-quarter 2026 figures.

The investment case ultimately rests on earnings resilience. If the bank can absorb deposit-market pressure within its overall plan, the lower capital requirement becomes a genuine additional support. Should competition for savings intensify to the point where the profit target itself comes into question, that reading would need to turn more cautious.
