Commerzbank is leaning on capital returns to keep shareholders onside while it navigates the aftermath of its takeover tussle with UniCredit. The Frankfurt lender's ongoing share repurchase programme sits at the centre of that effort, with the bank steadily mopping up its own stock to lift value for investors.

A regulatory filing dated 22 September shows the group bought back 1,976,889 of its own shares in the most recent reporting window. Since the programme began in early September, the cumulative volume has reached 4,217,261 shares. The bank is thus reducing the number of freely traded shares in line with plan — a move that offers investors a dependable prop during trading.

Nomura's Stake Slips Below the Reporting Threshold

Shifts are also emerging among the major shareholders. According to a voting rights notification dated 24 September 2026, Nomura Holdings cut its total holding in Commerzbank to 5.90%, down from a previously reported 8.07%. That position breaks down into 1.15% held directly through shares and 4.75% via assigned financial instruments, with the formal crossing of the reporting threshold dated 17 September 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?

A further notification from Nomura Holdings Inc. followed on 25 September 2026. On Commerzbank's shareholder overview, the Frankfurt bank now lists Nomura with 0.55% in shares and 5.31% through instruments, with the relevant threshold touched on 21 September 2026.

Shares Climb as Bank Stocks Rally

Friday brought a firm lift for the stock on the Frankfurt exchange. Per dpa-AFX, banking names across Europe drew support from hopes of a de-escalation in the Middle East, and Commerzbank rose to the top of the DAX. The shares closed Friday at EUR 42.39, a gain of 1.9%. The official closing price of EUR 42.39 leaves the stock 2.2% below its 52-week high of EUR 43.34, set on 16 September 2026. Since the start of the year, the security has posted a performance of 17%.

Orlopp Makes the Case for Dialogue and Value Creation

CEO Bettina Orlopp, meanwhile, has her eye on the bank's future shape. After the defensive battle against UniCredit, she made the case on Friday — in comments published on Commerzbank's website — for constructive dialogue and further value creation. She stressed that the financial institution must deliver even more value for shareholders going forward. The chief executive is also explicitly committed to retaining the bank's profitable Swiss business.

On Thursday, Reuters reported that Orlopp views a takeover of HypoVereinsbank via a share swap as a conceivable option in the event of a merger. Such an integration would, however, require a 75% voting majority on UniCredit's side. Investors will get concrete insight into the running business on 5 November, when Commerzbank publishes its interim results for the third quarter.
