Commerzbank: A 41-Euro Target, a 2.3% Dip, and Two Dates That Matter More Than Either
Published on 10/20/2026 at 09:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deCommerzbank shares slipped 2.3% on Monday, caught in a broad retreat across European bank stocks. dpa attributed the downbeat mood to worries over France and Ukraine, alongside rising oil prices and bond yields — a market-wide drag rather than any company-specific disclosure. The distinction matters: a rough trading session says nothing about whether the business itself is deteriorating.
What does carry weight sits elsewhere on the calendar. RBC Capital Markets lifted its price target on 13 October to 41 euros from 40, keeping its "Sector Perform" rating unchanged. The move came before Monday's decline, so it was no reaction to the weak session — and a higher target is a revised analyst view, not a reported result. It offers no protection against a falling market.
Estimates Rise, Ratings Don't
The same pattern shows up across the analyst community. JPMorgan reaffirmed its "Neutral" stance on Friday with a 39-euro target while nudging up its earnings forecasts for 2027 and 2028. Better profit expectations, in other words, did not translate into a higher target or a warmer recommendation. Deutsche Bank Research, for its part, reiterated "Hold" with a 42-euro target on Thursday, anticipating solid results on the back of strong momentum in net interest and commission income.
Those operating expectations are the yardstick the next set of figures will have to meet. The takeover debate is not the only measure by which the stock will be judged — revenue development counts just as much.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Commerzbank?
Buybacks Versus the Tape
On the corporate side, Commerzbank repurchased 3,157,027 of its own shares last week, bringing the programme launched in September to a cumulative 14,271,110 shares. That buying forms a company-level counterweight to the gloomy market tone, though it did nothing to prevent Monday's drop. No reliable read on short-term direction can be drawn from the programme alone.
The ownership question remains live as well. UniCredit said on Thursday, according to Reuters, that the ECB had authorised it to cross the 30% threshold in Commerzbank, with no cap on further increases. That permission is a separate matter from any stake actually built.
Two Tests Ahead
On the political front, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil reported constructive talks with UniCredit on Friday over the conditions attached to its bid. The EU Commission is expected to rule on the plans by 16 November. UniCredit anticipates holding roughly 50% of Commerzbank's voting rights and assuming control around year-end, once outstanding proceedings and offer conditions are settled.
The next hard checkpoint is 5 November 2026, when Commerzbank reports third-quarter 2026 results. That release will test Deutsche Bank's revenue thesis against actual numbers — until then, the expected momentum is forecast, not confirmed, just as JPMorgan's upgraded estimates refer to future years. Improved profit projections pre-empt neither the quarterly report nor the regulatory decisions and offer conditions still standing between UniCredit and control.
