Chinese Solar Slowdown Weighs on Silver as Miners Buck the Downtrend

A sharp pullback in Chinese solar cell manufacturing is casting a shadow over the silver market, offsetting a wave of upbeat production reports from major mine operators. Output of photovoltaic cells in China fell 15.2% year-on-year in September, according to data from industry tracker Shanghai Metals Market, while average plant utilization slid to 53.5% — a drop of just over 23 percentage points compared with a year earlier. With solar manufacturers among the metal's biggest consumers, the weaker activity feeds straight through to pricing.

The demand setback lands in an already difficult stretch for the precious metal. Silver has lost 18% since the start of the year, closing Thursday's futures trading at $57.60 an ounce — a 53% gap from its 52-week high of $121.78. Yet the session itself offered a rare bright spot: COMEX prices advanced 3.2% on the day.

Mine Output Offers a Counterweight

Operational updates from primary producers have provided some ballast. Guanajuato Silver reported third-quarter 2026 production of 392,138 ounces of silver, with total output reaching 683,675 silver-equivalent ounces — a 13.7% gain on the prior quarter. Production was buoyant at the Mexican operations in Bolanitos, El Cubo and San Ignacio, even as mining at the Valenciana complex was suspended.

Endeavour Silver, which flagged its production increase on October 8, posted third-quarter silver output of 2,096,545 ounces, up 19% year-on-year. Management intends to recalculate its full-year guidance following operational interruptions at the Terronera and Guanaceví sites, with updated figures due on November 9. Aya Gold & Silver, meanwhile, logged a record 1,497,749 ounces at its Zgounder mine — an 11% improvement on the same quarter a year earlier.

Inventories Build on Both Sides of the Atlantic

Stockpiles have been climbing in parallel with the supply reports. According to the London Bullion Market Association, holdings in London vaults rose 3.22% to 28,985 tonnes by the end of the third quarter. At the COMEX, a CME Group warehouse report showed a total of 333.80 million ounces midweek, split between 103.15 million ounces in the immediately deliverable "registered" category and 230.66 million ounces in "eligible" holdings. The build in registered stocks helps cushion short-term delivery bottlenecks — a data point dealers watch closely for clues on how supply is squaring with industrial offtake.

Global mine production rose 3% to 846.6 million ounces in 2025, though the LBMA expects a modest 0.3% decline to 844.1 million ounces for full-year 2026.

Structural Constraints Keep Supply Tight

Any rebound in output remains structurally capped. Much of the world's silver emerges as a by-product of base-metal mining, meaning supply cannot respond quickly to price signals. Kenny Zhu, a strategist at precious metals specialist Sprott, estimates that industrial applications account for 50% to 60% of global demand — so any softness in manufacturing offtake hits the market almost immediately. DiRienzo echoed that view, noting that major supply jumps are unlikely given silver's by-product status, leaving investors to judge whether recent gains in mine output can meet sustained industrial demand over the longer term.

Macro Headwinds and the Calendar Ahead

Macroeconomic forces are adding to the pressure. Following the latest US inflation data, rate expectations for the Federal Reserve's late-October meeting firmed, lending support to the dollar and weighing on non-yielding assets. Fresh catalysts are close at hand: Mexico's statistics agency publishes national mining production figures on October 21, the US central bank decides its next rate move at the end of the month, and the next round of US consumer price data lands on November 10.
