CATL's Volume Story Is Outrunning Its Profit Story
Published on 10/23/2026 at 06:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deCATL can point to a 20–30% global demand increase for traction and storage batteries in 2027, a storage segment expanding at roughly 60% year on year, and a commanding 40.92% share of China's EV battery market. What the battery giant cannot yet show is a bottom line keeping pace with any of it.
The company's own reading of its quarterly performance, published today, keeps the volume outlook firmly positive. The earnings side tells a different story — and that gap is where the investment case now turns.
Storage Carries the Volume, Not Yet the Margin
Storage batteries were the standout in the third quarter of 2026, with sales up about 60% from a year earlier. They accounted for roughly 25% of CATL's total battery shipments. That momentum underpins management's confident demand forecast, though it leaves open the question of how profitably CATL can move additional volumes.
The broader market backdrop is supportive. BloombergNEF expects newly installed global energy storage capacity to rise 45% in 2026 to 188 GW, driven by solar buildout, storage mandates and subsidy programs. Protectionism is simultaneously making market access harder for Chinese suppliers and redrawing supply chains — a reminder that a growing world market does not translate automatically into unrestricted opportunities for CATL.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?
A 58.58% Revenue Jump, a 14.54% Profit Gain
Third-quarter revenue climbed 58.58% year on year, while net profit advanced just 14.54% and fell short of expectations. According to the South China Morning Post, a less profitable product mix, lower export VAT rebates and higher write-downs all weighed on the result. Company statements also cite the product mix, consumption tax and reduced export tax refunds as profitability headwinds.
The gross margin fell to 20.69% — 5.1 percentage points below the year-earlier quarter and 2.46 points below the prior three months. Reuters attributed the slower profit growth to intensifying battery competition and cooling Chinese car sales, the wider backdrop against which CATL must defend its position.
None of this means the business is shrinking. Net profit for the first nine months of 2026 rose 31.6%, according to media reports — still substantial growth. Two facts sit side by side: CATL earns more than a year ago, and profit growth decelerated sharply in the latest quarter. Neither cancels the other.
The Tax Bill Becomes the Swing Factor
CATL is negotiating with customers over how to split the additional costs, and it has not confirmed that any pass-through has been secured. The consumption tax introduced more than a month ago is now part of the cost environment management must answer for. UOB Kay Hian expects CATL to push part of the tax burden through via higher battery prices and sees scope for a margin recovery in the final quarter — on the assumption that company and customers each absorb half the load.
A further squeeze arrives on January 1, 2027, when the export tax rebate ends. The demand outlook can stay bright while the earnings path remains unsecured. For investors, the decisive question is whether CATL can pair that expected additional demand with effective cost pass-through.
CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Leadership Is Not a Free Pass
September data from the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance, released on October 15, put CATL's share of China's EV battery market at 40.92%. Yet its lead over rival BYD narrowed for a fourth consecutive month. CATL is defending the top spot while a key competitor closes in — no loss of leadership, but hardly evidence that sheer scale keeps competitive pressure at bay indefinitely.
The company has also bought back its own A-shares, intended for cancellation. That is a matter of share capital management; it does not answer the operating question of how profitable the additional battery business is. A 3.2% gain in the stock on the day does not answer it either.
The more convincing development would be one in which market strength and profit growth converge again. Until then, neither the company's size nor a single good trading session earns the benefit of the doubt. The real test sits between strong shipment growth and what that growth actually earns.
