CATL's Swap-Network Push Meets a Sobering Reset in Earnings Expectations

CATL rose 7.8% with no company-specific catalyst, as BAIC and Huawei swap-network deals contrast with BofA's lower target and weak cash flow.

CATL shares climbed 7.8% as part of a broader rebound across the lithium battery sector, a move that market commentary does not tie to any fresh company-specific catalyst. The gain offers little insight into the company's strategy on its own. Two separate developments tell a more useful story: a pair of battery-swapping partnerships that broaden CATL's ecosystem ambitions, and a downbeat revision from Bank of America Securities that questions how efficiently the company converts growth into profit.

Wiring Vehicles to the Swap Network

CATL and BAIC have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to improve the compatibility of vehicles with battery-swapping systems and to build out the supporting infrastructure. Their stated goal is to serve one million vehicles. BAIC intends to connect models from several of its group brands to CATL's Choco-Swap network.

Perhaps the less glamorous part of the deal carries the most weight: BAIC will open its dealer network for the construction of swap stations. That brings site access for infrastructure into the arrangement, not just the vehicle side. A swap network and compatible cars are not separate stories, and the partners aim to advance both at once — an approach that addresses several preconditions for using the system simultaneously.

The scale of the target should not be mistaken for an existing fleet. One million vehicles to be served is a goal, and both the planned model integration and the dealer-network opening describe intentions rather than completed build-out.

The BAIC pact sits alongside another collaboration on the swap ecosystem. On Monday, Yinwang, CATL and Contemporary Amperex Energy Service Technology signed an agreement that Reuters reports will link Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving system with CATL's Choco battery-swap ecosystem, covering compatible vehicles and the station network. That widens the scope: it is not only about connecting more models to a network, but also about integrating an intelligent driving system. Whether that produces a compelling combined offering cannot be read from a signed agreement alone, though the direction is clear — CATL is seeking links between vehicle technology and swap infrastructure.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

A different application area surfaced on Tuesday, when CATL presented a dual-electric battery system for extended range along with upgraded swap solutions for heavy trucks. Bloomberg reported announced agreements covering 13,000 units, including orders from SF Holding and China Postal Express & Logistics. Unlike the BAIC cooperation, where a joint expansion target takes center stage, this announcement comes with orders behind it. The two should be neither equated nor viewed in isolation: CATL is pursuing battery swapping across different vehicle applications and with different partners.

A Buy Rating With a Lower Bar

Bank of America Securities cut its price target on CATL to 630 HKD from 775 HKD, while keeping its "Buy" rating. That is not a full retreat, but it is a markedly more cautious view of earnings prospects.

The reasoning behind the lower target matters. The bank expects higher shipments of energy storage batteries, but also lower average battery prices and gross margins. In that arithmetic, more volume does not automatically mean proportionally more profit. The firm trimmed its forecast for adjusted net profit by 8.6% for 2026 and by 14.8% for 2027. The steeper cut to the later estimate argues against the convenient explanation of a merely temporary quarterly hiccup.

The unchanged buy rating should not obscure the reduced expectations. It shows the bank still sees opportunity, but it removes neither the pricing pressure nor the strain on profitability. A convincing re-rating would require more from CATL than rising shipment volumes.

The Cash-Flow Signal

In the third quarter of 2026, revenue rose 58.58% year on year, while net profit grew 14.54%. The gross margin stood at 20.69%. The company is expanding briskly but translating that growth only partially into additional earning power. That gap matters more than the impressive top-line figure in isolation: expansion loses quality for shareholders when a smaller share of revenue remains as gross profit.

The operating cash flow figure is sharper still. It collapsed 93.59% compared with the prior-year quarter and, according to media reports, reached its lowest level since the second quarter of 2018. CATL cites shorter payment terms with suppliers, higher advance payments and long-running overseas projects. Those are concrete explanations for the cash tie-up, but they do not alter the fact that the running business released considerably less money.

CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Earnings pressures are tangible as well. According to the company, a higher share of less value-added products and changed tax conditions weighed on profit. The consumption tax on lithium batteries and a reduced export tax rebate compound a problem that additional units alone cannot solve. The weak cash flow is neither proof of a lasting crisis nor a trivial accounting effect — it is a test. The cited payment and project conditions explain the strain but do not substitute for evidence of later improvement.

What the Rally Does Not Prove

Against that backdrop, the 7.8% advance is no all-clear. A single positive session refutes neither the lowered profit forecasts nor the weak cash generation of the past quarter. The operating question remains how much financial room the growing business actually leaves behind.

CATL has already shown that demand can support strong revenue growth. The more persuasive evidence would be growth, profitability and operating cash flow moving back in step. Until then, the day's rebound is a positive market signal rather than a durable sign of an economic turnaround — and the swap partnerships, for all their strategic contour, still have to turn announced compatibility, opened dealer networks and agreed unit volumes into offerings customers can actually use.
