CATL closed the third quarter of 2026 with revenue of 165.22 billion yuan, up 58.6% from a year earlier — a headline number that would ordinarily settle any argument about demand. It doesn't. Net profit rose just 14.5% to 21.25 billion yuan over the same stretch, and fell 5.8% from the second quarter, leaving investors to weigh a fast-expanding top line against earnings that are not keeping pace.

The storage battery business is where the volume story looks strongest. Shipments in that segment climbed roughly 60% year on year in the third quarter, and storage accounted for about 25% of CATL's total battery sales. That mix supports management's confidence in the demand outlook, though it says little about how profitably the additional units are being sold.

Margin compression behind the selloff

Gross margin slipped to 20.69%, down 5.1 percentage points from the year-earlier quarter and 2.46 points below the prior three months. CATL attributed the pressure to its product mix, a newly introduced consumption tax and a smaller export tax rebate. Reuters identified the profit miss and weaker margins as the main drivers of the share price reaction, alongside fierce competition in the battery market and slowing growth in Chinese car sales.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

The consumption tax, brought in just over a month ago, has become the focal point of the earnings debate. CATL is negotiating with customers over how to split the added cost and has not confirmed that any pass-through has been secured. UOB Kay Hian expects the company to push part of the tax burden onto buyers through higher battery prices and sees room for a margin recovery in the final quarter — a view built on the assumption that manufacturer and customers each absorb half the levy. A further headwind arrives on January 1, 2027, when the export tax rebate ends.

A 20–30% market forecast, with caveats

Management said on Tuesday that it expects the global market for power and storage batteries to grow 20–30% in 2027, citing rising vehicle electrification and larger battery capacity per car. That is a forecast for the market, not a commitment on CATL's own revenue or profit. Industry data points the same way: BloombergNEF projects newly installed global energy storage capacity will rise 45% to 188 GW in 2026, driven by solar buildout, storage mandates and subsidy programs. Protectionism is simultaneously making it harder for Chinese suppliers to access some markets and shifting supply chains, so a larger global pie does not translate automatically into unrestricted sales opportunities for CATL.

The gap between the two figures — revenue up 58.58%, profit up 14.54% — is the crux of the investment case. More business is not the same as better business, and a surging top line can mask profitability that fails to keep up. None of this amounts to a profit collapse against the prior year, and the annual comparison alone does not justify ignoring the sequential decline. Both readings carry weight precisely because they tell different stories.

What investors should watch next

The more useful yardstick from here is not another revenue record but whether earnings growth and margins realign with the pace of the business. That is not an extra company forecast — it is the logical consequence of the latest quarter. CATL has no convincingly documented demand problem; what it has is an open question on profitability. The expected market expansion offers opportunity, but until it produces more convincing margins it remains an incomplete argument for the stock. Growth deserves recognition. It does not substitute for a vote of confidence in earning power.
