CATL shares climbed 7.8% on Friday, lifted by a broad recovery across Chinese and South Korean equities rather than by any fresh company announcement. Media accounts attributed the move to shifting trading flows and a rotation back into previously sold-off sectors, framing it as a mood-driven countermove following steep losses rather than confirmation of a fundamental turnaround. Battery-linked names and other growth sectors helped drive the afternoon rebound in China.

Third-Quarter Profit Misses Expectations

The rally follows a Tuesday earnings release in which CATL reported a third-quarter 2026 net profit of 21.2 billion yuan, up 14.5% year on year. According to Reuters, that marked the slowest earnings growth in nearly two years. Revenue for the same quarter rose 58.6% to 165.2 billion yuan, yet both the top and bottom lines fell short of analyst expectations, Reuters reported.

Management pointed to product mix as well as consumption-tax and export-tax-rebate effects when explaining per-unit profitability. Reuters also noted that CATL's share of China's traction-battery installation market stood at 40.9% in September, down from 49.8% in January.

Nine-Month Figures and Buyback Activity

For the first nine months of 2026, CATL posted revenue of 442.14 billion RMB and a net profit of 64.53 billion RMB. Alongside those results, the company repurchased 3,488,600 A-shares on Wednesday for roughly 800 million RMB, according to its own disclosures, then added a further 2,271,000 A-shares on Thursday for about 499.9 million RMB — buying back stock on two consecutive trading days. A mandatory disclosure to the Hong Kong exchange put the Wednesday tranche at 3.49 million A-shares for around 800 million RMB.

Battery-Swap Partnerships and Network Targets

Chinese industry coverage tied the battery sector's recovery to several catalysts beyond the buybacks, including partnerships built around battery swapping. On Wednesday, CATL and the Shaanxi Transportation Holding Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement covering the electrification of commercial vehicles, battery-swap stations for heavy trucks, energy storage and charging infrastructure along highways — a collaboration spanning multiple corners of transport infrastructure.

CATL, its Chocolate Swap unit and Huawei subsidiary Yinwang also agreed on Monday to link their systems technically, according to media reports. Huawei's intelligent-driving systems are to be connected with CATL's battery-swap ecosystem, with the planned vehicle-to-station workflow designed to complete a swap in 99 seconds.

Reuters additionally reported on CATL's plans to expand its battery-swap network for heavy trucks. The company is targeting 900 stations in China by the end of the year, rising to 2,000 by 2027 — concrete build-out goals that sit alongside the newly signed cooperation agreements.
