CATL's Indonesia Plant Begins Output, Giving Investors a Harder Metric Than Washington Politics

CATL shares climbed 4.4% in the latest session, swept up in a broader rally across Chinese clean-energy names. Reuters attributed the sector-wide move to expectations that a Democrat-controlled US Congress could strengthen support for renewable energy. That political tailwind, however, is not the most persuasive argument in the CATL story right now — a production milestone reported the same day carries more weight.

Media reports indicate the joint venture between CATL and Antam in Indonesia has already started producing, ahead of its scheduled official opening. The project is described as involving US$6 billion in investment and an initial annual capacity of 6.9 GWh. That shifts the discussion from a planned facility to an operating one, though it does not yet establish how quickly the plant will be utilized or what earnings contribution it can deliver.

The distinction matters for anyone weighing the stock. A friendlier industry mood can lift a share price without altering a single company's business outlook. A plant coming online is a different kind of evidence — an execution step rather than an expectation. Even so, industrial progress and financial success are not the same thing, and the market would do well to keep them apart.

Two Yardsticks for the Same Stock

The rally gives CATL two separate measures to answer to. One points to possible political support; the other to expected profits. JPMorgan, for its part, trimmed its earnings estimates for the battery maker while keeping a positive rating on the shares. That combination — confidence paired with more cautious profit assumptions — is more instructive than an unqualified bullish call, because it holds optimism and lower forecasts side by side.

The tension is worth sitting with. Investors buying CATL on future earnings must factor in the reduced expectations. The positive verdict stands despite the downgraded projections, but its conviction ultimately rests on whether the company converts business opportunities into actual profit. Political expectations can move sentiment; an earnings-based valuation cares only about what the company delivers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Growth That Outpaces the Bottom Line

The third-quarter figures published on October 21 illustrate why that earnings yardstick matters. CATL booked revenue of RMB 165.22 billion in Q3 2026, up 58.6% year on year — a forceful growth signal. What counts just as much, though, is how much of that expansion reaches the profit line. New capacity and fresh partnerships only gain lasting credibility when earnings keep pace.

Attributable net profit came in at RMB 21.25 billion, an increase of 14.5%. That is markedly slower than the top-line advance. The gap does not invalidate the business growth, but it argues against treating more business and proportionally stronger profitability as one and the same. Here lies the main caveat to a purely optimistic reading: CATL is showing expansion and operational progress, while its profit trajectory counsels discipline about the quality of that growth.

A Pipeline of Announcements, Each With Its Own Weight

Recent weeks have added several pieces to the expansion picture. On October 30, CATL globally unveiled its TENER+ energy storage system and signed further letters of intent in Australia. A day later, it announced a letter of intent with Octopus Energy and its subsidiary Ampace covering European home storage. The company has also partnered with Blue Vector Intelligent Technology, a tie-up whose value to shareholders depends on whether the agreed development yields a commercially viable application.

These announcements are not equivalent in evidentiary value. A letter of intent documents willingness to cooperate; a product launch presents an offering; a production start represents operational progress. For valuation purposes, they should not be lumped together as secured business success. The aviation collaboration with Blue Vector offers a concrete test case for the technological ambition — a better gauge than the daily mood of the market.

Chairman and CEO Robin Zeng framed the strategic direction on October 31 at the World Laureates Forum, calling for closer cooperation between the battery industry and the scientific community and for greater use of artificial intelligence to speed up scientific discovery and technological innovation.

Taken together, the picture is cautiously positive. The Indonesia plant, built with Antam, gives CATL a more tangible tailwind than the political imagination of a sector rally alone. For a durably convincing trajectory, though, earnings quality must keep step with expansion. Today's advance is understandable; the stronger argument remains the execution on the ground.
