CATL shares fell 8.0% today as disappointing quarterly results collided with a fresh round of analyst downgrades, shifting investor attention from how fast the battery giant is growing to how much profit and cash that expansion actually generates.

The stock reaction followed a profit report that landed short of expectations. Net income came in at RMB 21.25 billion, up 14.5% year on year but down 5.8% from the prior quarter — a split dynamic that captures the company's current predicament. Revenue climbed 58.6% to RMB 165.22 billion, yet that figure also missed forecasts. Reuters pointed to intensifying competition in the battery market and cooling growth in Chinese auto sales as headwinds.

Analysts Trim Targets, Citing Unit Economics

Several brokerages cut their price targets after the release, according to media reports. Dow Jones reported that analysts flagged weaker per-unit profitability, cost pressures and impairment effects. The cuts signal caution about near-term earnings power rather than an outright bearish call on the stock — a distinction worth keeping in mind. The targets are denominated in HK$, so they are not directly comparable with a share price quoted in CNY.

Costs Outpace Revenue as Margins Narrow

The pressure on profitability is visible well beyond the quarterly snapshot. Over the first nine months of 2026, cost of sales rose 61.61%, outpacing revenue growth of 56.19% over the same stretch. The squeeze has already reached the gross margin line: according to CnEVPost, the nine-month gross margin slipped to 22.72% from 25.31% a year earlier.

A weaker financial result added to the drag. MarketWatch reported that CATL attributed the decline in net finance income primarily to currency losses. Higher costs and unfavorable exchange rates, then, help explain why the earnings miss was not simply a volume story.

Working Capital Swells, Cash Generation Shrinks

Cash flow tells a similar story. Operating cash flow fell 23.60% in the first nine months of 2026. Receivables at the end of September stood 47.78% above the level at the start of the year, while inventories swelled 53.15%. Both tie up funds that do not flow back as readily available liquidity — a reminder that accounting profit and cash generation are not the same thing.

The balance sheet, however, offers ample room to maneuver. CATL finished the reporting period with cash and tradable financial assets totaling more than RMB 430 billion, a buffer that rules out any comparison with an acute financing squeeze. It does not, though, relieve the company of the operational task of converting its expanding business back into stronger cash inflows.

Storage Business Offers a Potential Margin Offset

One lever for improving the business mix sits in energy storage. In the first half of 2026, the storage systems segment posted a gross margin of 23.96%, versus 20.63% for power battery systems — making storage the more profitable business at the gross level in that period. Storage revenue jumped 87.54% in the first half. CATL has not yet disclosed standalone storage revenue for the third quarter, and a heavier weighting toward the segment is no guarantee of a group-wide margin recovery.

Truck Swapping Network Keeps Expansion on Track

Operationally, CATL continues to push outward. Yesterday the company unveiled its Tianxing II battery platform and presented upgrades to its battery-swapping solution, alongside plans to build 900 truck battery-swap stations in China by year-end, rising to 2,000 by 2027.

Those ambitions provide a counterweight to the softer profit trend, but they do not answer the question analysts have raised about profitability. For investors, growth and earnings quality now sit side by side: the expansion rolls on, while the lowered price targets reflect more cautious expectations about what that growth is worth.
