CATL's latest quarterly report card shows a company selling more batteries than ever but keeping far less of each yuan in profit. Third-quarter earnings rose 14.5% to 21.2 billion yuan, well short of the 41.2% growth pencilled in by LSEG SmartEstimate — the weakest expansion in nearly two years, according to Reuters.

Revenue told a different story. Sales climbed 58.6% to 165.2 billion yuan, though even that fell shy of the 60.2% growth analysts had anticipated. The gap between the top and bottom lines is the crux of the report: CATL is expanding its business at a furious clip, but the extra volume is not converting into a comparable jump in earnings. Management attributed the revenue gain to the broadening of its operations.

Price War Eats Into Margins

Behind the miss sits a familiar culprit. Fierce competition in electric-vehicle batteries, compounded by slowing car sales in China, has squeezed the profitability of each unit sold. The disappointment, in other words, is not about a business that failed to grow — it is about how much of that growth reaches the bottom line.

The pressure is visible over a longer horizon too. Gross margin for the first nine months of 2026 came in at 22.72%, down from 25.31% a year earlier. Operating cash flow over the same period fell 23.60% to 61.63 billion yuan. Profit, margin and cash generation each tell a different facet of the same problem: CATL must translate growth into earnings and liquidity under tougher competitive conditions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

JPMorgan Splits Its Verdict

JPMorgan responded by downgrading CATL's H-shares to "Neutral" while leaving the A-shares at "Overweight," and trimmed its earnings forecasts. The bank points to industry profitability fading faster than expected and a broader redistribution of profits along the EV value chain. It flags a battery consumption tax, reduced export rebates and mounting trade barriers as headwinds for automakers — pressures CATL may absorb first. Over the longer run, JPMorgan sees possible benefits, including stronger customer ties, so the call is no blanket rejection of the company.

The stock's -3.0% slide fits that more cautious mood, set against a weak backdrop for lithium-battery shares generally. Media reports tie the drop to worries about softening demand, competitive pressure and automakers spreading their supplier base — though the day's move alone cannot tell investors how much each factor contributed.

Partnerships and Buybacks Run in Parallel

Against those concerns, CATL has been busy signing on the dotted line. Reuters reported that CATL, Yinwang Intelligent Technology and the company's battery-swapping subsidiary signed a cooperation agreement yesterday covering interchangeable batteries and the swapping network — a framework spanning both the packs and the infrastructure around them. On 11 October, CATL had already struck a long-term strategic cooperation agreement with the Seres Group to deepen their battery partnership.

CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Capital-side activity has continued as well. The company bought back its own A-shares for RMB 49.9936 million yesterday, following further repurchases on Friday and Thursday. On 13 October it committed RMB 400 million to a venture capital fund, equal to 26.64% of the vehicle's total committed capital, targeting new and future energy technologies alongside artificial intelligence and digital technologies.

Those threads should be read separately: the agreements concern battery collaboration, the fund stake touches technology investment, and the buybacks support the share price. None on its own signals a revival in demand — and that uncertainty remains at the heart of what is weighing on the stock.
