CATL Chases Argentine Storage Deals While Buybacks Paper Over a Thinning Margin

CATL is in talks with several winners of Argentina's storage tenders over supply arrangements, according to media reports published today, as the battery giant hunts for fresh outlets for its grid-scale storage products and simultaneously eyes storage solutions for mining operations. For investors, the distinction matters: the discussions open a commercial door but do not yet amount to confirmed delivery orders.

The groundwork in Argentina is already partly laid. CATL has participated in four grid storage projects in the country — two alongside Central Puerto, one with Edison, and a fourth where the partner was not disclosed. To push further into the market, the company recently assembled a local sales and engineering team, pairing on-the-ground presence with the search for additional projects. Beyond the live supply talks, attention is fixed on further storage capacity that Cammesa is looking to build out.

Interest in mining storage widens the pool of potential applications, though for now it remains an aspiration rather than a book of business. Existing project stakes, negotiations with tender winners and the pursuit of mining customers carry differing degrees of certainty and should not be read as a single, uniform order backlog.

Framework Deals Are Not Orders

That same caution applies to CATL's sodium-ion business. According to a report yesterday from 36Kr Japan, four partnerships announced in 2026 add up to as much as 70 GWh. Many of those arrangements are framework agreements or target figures rather than confirmed contracts. The headline volumes demonstrate the technology's potential but do not lock in corresponding sales. What counts when gauging the expansion is not the size of an agreement alone, but whether it hardens into binding delivery obligations.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Hyper Strong in China accounts for the largest slice of the stated project targets, with up to 60 GWh over three years. European partner projects together contribute up to 10 GWh.

Cost expectations for sodium-ion storage are equally unsettled. Some manufacturers anticipate cell costs of around USD 40/kWh at higher production volumes, yet IRENA left open in November 2025 whether the technology will undercut lithium-ion batteries over the long run.

A Buyback in the Shadow of Slower Profit Growth

Argentina offers CATL another foothold in storage — existing project stakes, a local team and talks about additional deliveries. The next hard milestone would be the conversion of those talks into firm orders. Until then, the expansion broadens the business outlook without evidencing secured incremental revenue.

On the capital side, CATL has already executed share buybacks, not merely announced an intention to do so, per a mandatory disclosure. The shares were acquired for cancellation, although the filing does not establish that a cancellation has already been completed, nor does it prove purchases will continue beyond the reported period. The buyback is therefore an additional input for valuation, not a substitute for operational progress.

The number that really matters is the margin. Media reports put the gross margin at 19.3%, with shifts in product mix and higher tax costs cited as drags. Citi cut its price target on 21 October to 479 yuan from 500 yuan, pointing also to higher expenses and larger impairment losses. The question is not only whether CATL can unlock extra demand, but how much profit survives after costs and charges. A buyback does not alter that operating arithmetic.

Roughly a week ago, CATL reported third-quarter 2026 net profit of 21.2 billion yuan, up 14.5% — the slowest earnings growth in almost two years, according to Reuters. Profit kept rising, but far less briskly than revenue, making profitability the touchstone for the next stage of operating progress.

Revenue Outpaces Earnings

The bear case is already visible in the latest figures. Revenue reached 165.2 billion yuan, a gain of 58.6%, yet both the top and bottom lines fell short of analyst expectations, Reuters reported. The lofty growth rate alone could not dispel the disappointment. Reuters cited fierce competition in the battery market and cooling growth in Chinese car sales — both of which could make it harder to pair additional business with better earnings quality.

CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The risk for investors therefore does not lie solely in a possible demand slump. Even further revenue growth could disappoint if expenses and impairments cap profit expansion. A larger business would then be no sufficient proof of a more attractive valuation. In that case the buybacks would remain a completed capital measure, but they would not remove the source of operating pressure, and their significance should not be equated with a confirmed earnings turnaround.

The Positive Case Hinges on Execution

The upbeat scenario requires CATL to open new sales channels while stabilizing earnings quality. Buybacks and improved operations could then reinforce each other, with the capital measure meeting a more resilient business rather than standing alone. One concrete lever is the electrification of heavy trucks — a pointer to intended use, not yet evidence of a corresponding profit contribution.

Reuters also reported expansion plans for the Qiji battery-swap network: CATL is targeting 900 stations in China by year-end and 2,000 by 2027. If delivered, that could open additional applications for the business. For a more favorable valuation, though, the buildout would need to translate into economically viable revenue, not just more activity.

The next concrete checkpoint is the end of the year, when the target for the Chinese Qiji network comes up for review. Hitting it would mark progress on execution, but would not by itself show that the earnings problem is solved. The investment case thus rests on a clean separation: CATL has deployed capital on buybacks and is pursuing concrete growth plans. Whether that yields more convincing profit growth is a condition of the positive scenario — not its result.
