CATL bought back 3,488,624 A-shares on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange today for a total of RMB 799,998,538.5, with the repurchased stock earmarked for cancellation. The move came as the battery maker's shares were nursing a 12% one-day slide, and as a wave of analyst downgrades reframed the debate around the company: the question is no longer whether CATL can grow, but how much of that growth reaches the bottom line.

A capital return that sidesteps the real issue

The mandatory disclosure confirms the purchase has already been executed; cancellation is stated as the purpose, and nothing in the filing implies the process is complete or that further buying will follow. For shareholders, the distinction matters — the buyback addresses how CATL handles its own equity, not how profitably it converts demand into earnings.

That operational question is where the quarter went wrong. Net profit attributable to shareholders for the third quarter of 2026 came in at RMB 21.25 billion, up 14.54% year on year. Analysts had been looking for roughly RMB 26 billion, per Reuters, equivalent to growth of about 41.2%. Revenue climbed 58.58% to RMB 165.22 billion.

The miss was therefore not a decline — profit still advanced — but a wide gap against expectations, thrown into relief by the far faster expansion of the top line.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Four houses, one theme

Brokers moved quickly. Citi cut its target to RMB 479 from RMB 500, citing a lower-than-expected gross margin, higher expenses and larger impairment losses. Nomura went further, slashing its target to RMB 408 from RMB 632 on short-term pressure on unit profitability. JPMorgan lowered its target for the Hong Kong-listed shares to HK$500 yesterday, pointing to a faster-than-expected deterioration in battery-industry profitability.

The common thread across all three is earnings quality rather than demand. Citi's note in particular spreads the blame across several layers of the income statement: margin compression alone does not explain the revision, since extra costs and write-downs also eat into profit. Reuters, meanwhile, flagged intensifying competition in the battery market and cooling growth in Chinese car sales as the backdrop.

Trucks, swaps and a 2026 deadline

None of this has slowed CATL's expansion plans. The company yesterday unveiled a new generation of batteries for heavy-duty trucks alongside a battery-swapping solution. According to Reuters, CATL aims to have 900 swap stations for trucks in operation by the end of 2026, rising to 2,000 by 2027.

CATL at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Those targets underline the scale of the build-out, but they do not answer the near-term profitability question raised by the analysts. Two signals are now running in parallel at CATL: a concrete capital measure in the form of the buyback, and a more skeptical read on earnings prospects from the sell side. The buyback does nothing to ease the competitive and demand pressures Reuters described.

What remains for investors is the margin trajectory — the yardstick against which both the buyback and the trucking ambitions will ultimately be judged.
