Carnival Analysts Trim Targets as Record Bookings Test the Stock's Next Leg
Published on 10/02/2026 at 14:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deShares of Carnival climbed 2.2% on Thursday to close at USD 25.07 in New York, extending a rally that has added roughly 13% over the past week. The advance follows the cruise operator's third-quarter fiscal 2026 results, released Tuesday, though market watchers were careful not to pin Thursday's gain directly on the earnings release.
Price Targets Move, Ratings Don't
Midweek brought a round of fine-tuning from the analyst community. Citigroup lowered its target on the cruise line from USD 37 to USD 35 while keeping a buy rating intact. Mizuho, according to media reports, trimmed its own objective from USD 39 to USD 38 and stayed at outperform. Other houses made similar modest cuts without abandoning their broadly constructive stance, leaving the consensus target range comfortably above the current trading level.
Not every revision pointed the same direction. Morgan Stanley raised its target from USD 31 to USD 33 on Wednesday, while BNP Paribas moved the other way, cutting its objective after the quarterly numbers landed.
A Record Quarter Underneath the Noise
The reassessments rest on a set of headline figures that rank among the strongest in the company's history. Revenue for the quarter reached a record USD 8.435 billion, with net income hitting an all-time high of USD 1.920 billion. On an adjusted basis, net profit came in at USD 2.0 billion.
Management used the results to sharpen full-year guidance, pointing to an adjusted net profit of about USD 3.080 billion for 2026. Adjusted earnings per share were lifted from USD 2.22 to roughly USD 2.24.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Carnival?
Passenger Deposits Emerge as the Real Story
For investors weighing what comes next, the most telling line in the report may not be revenue or profit at all. Customer deposits reached USD 7.6 billion during the quarter, a roughly 7% increase over the prior year's record. In the cruise industry, this metric functions as the most reliable leading indicator available, capturing actual cash inflows months before departure and offering a read on future occupancy.
The quality of those bookings matters as much as the volume. If Carnival can hold this level while pushing ticket prices higher, operating cash flow strengthens and debt reduction accelerates. A softening in advance payments, by contrast, would pressure margins the moment the company has to fill capacity through discounts.
Booking Momentum Extends Into 2028
Early sales efforts across the group's brands are already paying off. Carnival reported record highs for both booking volumes and prices for the 2027 travel year. The push into future periods continued this week: Carnival Cruise Line opened sales Wednesday for West Coast itineraries in 2028 and 2029, and Holland America Line followed Thursday by releasing bookings for its 2028 Canada and New England season.
That long visibility underpins institutional confidence. Should resilient travel pricing hold, it would offset rising operating costs, and the combination of high occupancy and higher revenue per passenger would leave room for further earnings surprises.
Fuel Costs and Consumer Caution Cut the Other Way
Risks to that bullish case are concrete. Carnival cleared the quarter despite higher fuel expenses, but volatile energy prices remain an unpredictable line item in ship operations. If cost inflation at sea keeps building, it could erode the benefits of higher ticket prices.
Sentiment is not uniformly positive either. The skepticism centers on how durable household spending will prove if vacation budgets shrink under broader inflation. Mounting signs that passengers are cutting back on onboard extras, or booking closer to departure, would put the current share price under selling pressure.
What to Watch From Here
Two markers will define the next stretch. As long as customer deposits hold near the USD 7.6 billion record and booking momentum for 2027 and 2028 stays firm, the bulls retain the upper hand, and a run at the analyst target zones beyond USD 30 looks fundamentally supported. A breakdown in pricing discipline, or sustained high fuel outlays forcing margin concessions, would put the recent gains at risk.
With the third-quarter earnings call wrapped up on September 29 and no further company events on the near-term calendar, industry reports on booking trends for the newly opened seasons now serve as the primary catalysts for Carnival's stock.
