Canaan's AI Infrastructure Pivot Fuels 12% Rally Despite Q2 Revenue Miss

Canaan's stock bucked a soft crypto tape on Friday, climbing 12% to €0.3080 as investors increasingly treat mining operators as infrastructure plays tied to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing rather than pure Bitcoin proxies. The advance came even as Bitcoin slipped 2.2% on the day, underscoring how sentiment around the sector has decoupled from the price of the underlying asset.
On-chain data appear to back that shift. According to CryptoQuant, the Bull Score Index jumped from 30 to 80 over the past week — its highest reading since October 2025 — a move that has lent support to mining equities despite the day's weaker Bitcoin print. The stock now trades 26% above its 50-day moving average, a technical signal that market watchers read as a short-term recovery after a bruising stretch since the start of the year.
A Quarter That Cut Both Ways
The rally follows Tuesday's release of second-quarter 2026 results, which painted a mixed picture. Revenue came in at $31.9 million, missing Canaan's own guidance range of $35 million to $45 million, and the adjusted EBITDA loss reached $74.9 million. The company also booked a quarterly loss of $97.6 million, with sales collapsing from $100.2 million a year earlier. Mining hardware was the weakest link: revenue from that segment fell to $13.6 million from $42.9 million in the first quarter.
Management is guiding for further softening in the current quarter, projecting third-quarter revenue of just $11 million to $15 million. A stabilizing counterweight has been Canaan's own mining operation, which generated $18 million in revenue during the second quarter and produced 243 Bitcoin.
The balance sheet, meanwhile, strengthened. Cash rose to $66 million at the end of the second quarter from $43 million at the close of the first, helped along by the strategic sale of crypto reserves.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Canaan?
Building Beyond Bitcoin
Canaan is pressing ahead with a strategic overhaul centered on expanding its proprietary mining activities and rolling out new product lines. The company is preparing mass production of its Avalon Home series for the third quarter, aiming to land consumer products in time for the holiday shopping season. It also intends to develop gigawatt-scale power resources by the end of 2026.
A July operational update showed installed hashrate across joint ventures rising to 4.85 EH/s, while the efficiency of the North American fleet held steady at an average of 17.9 J/TH.
Nasdaq Clock Ticking, Buybacks Rolling
Procedural relief also lifted sentiment. Canaan confirmed Friday that it has moved its listing to the Nasdaq Capital Market, a shift first made on July 1, and secured a 180-day extension through January 11, 2027, to regain compliance with the $1.00 minimum bid price requirement. Trading continues uninterrupted under the ticker CAN during that window.
In the meantime, the company is leaning on its liquid reserves to fund a buyback program. As of Tuesday, it had repurchased roughly 16.4 million ADSs for a total of $7.4 million, with management authorized to monetize portions of its digital currency holdings to finance the effort. Media reports indicate Canaan sold 3,952 Ether and 54 Bitcoin for approximately $13.9 million in late August, with a substantial share of those proceeds funneled straight back into the repurchases.
At the end of the second quarter, Canaan still held 1,915 Bitcoin and 3,952 Ether. That stash reflects management's view that the shares are trading below the combined value of the company's cash reserves and crypto holdings.
Analysts Trim Targets, Keep Faith
Wall Street adjusted its expectations midweek. Rosenblatt Securities cut its price target to $0.75 from $1.30 while maintaining a buy rating, and BTIG lowered its target to $2.00 from $3.00, also keeping a positive stance following the quarterly print.
Investors, though, remain cautious about the company's efforts to shore up the share price. The stock sits roughly 13% above its 50-day moving average but has shed 55% of its value since the beginning of the year — a reminder that the road back to compliance, and to confidence, is far from complete.
