BYD Slips With Hong Kong Peers as CATL's Miss Masks a Stronger September

BYD fell 3.1% in Hong Kong after CATL's quarterly miss dragged the sector, despite September sales up 16.98% and Citi's buy rating.

BYD shares moved lower in Hong Kong on Thursday, caught in a sector-wide downdraft after rival battery maker CATL posted quarterly earnings that fell short of market expectations. The stock was down 3.1% in the session, with pre-market indications pointing to a daily change of -2.3%. Other Chinese automakers and battery names listed in the city also weakened, making the decline a branch-wide affair rather than a company-specific verdict.

That distinction matters. The disappointing numbers came from CATL, not BYD, and the selling pressure spread across the sector. Nothing in the CATL release amounts to a profit warning for BYD, and no direct link between the two companies' results has been confirmed. Investors weighing the stock have to separate the trigger from the company affected by it.

September deliveries cut both ways

BYD's own operating news offers a counterweight — though a mixed one. On October 1 the company reported September sales of 463,561 vehicles, up 16.98% from the same month a year earlier. The monthly figure is a clear positive.

The cumulative picture is less flattering. Across the first nine months of the year, BYD sold 3,131,576 vehicles, a decline of 3.9% compared with the corresponding period of the prior year. Growth in the latest reported month therefore sits alongside a shortfall for the year to date. A single strong September does not by itself establish a recovery across the whole reporting period, and the sales data say nothing directly about profit or margin.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

A new flagship with fast-charging ambitions

On the product side, BYD has rolled out a new limousine priced from 235,900 yuan, positioning it as a flagship. The headline feature is charging technology. The company had already shown vehicles and systems at the Paris Motor Show on October 12, including the second generation of its Blade Battery.

For the Great Han model, BYD quotes a charging time of nine minutes to lift the battery from 10% to 97%. That is a stated capability, not an independently verified real-world test.

Citi stays bullish ahead of the numbers

Analyst sentiment provides another counterpoint to the weak tape. Citi reaffirmed its buy rating on BYD and a target price of HK$142 for the H-shares on October 15. The bank projected quarterly net profit of RMB 12.95 billion, a figure that excludes foreign-exchange effects and the earnings contribution from BYD Electronic. That estimate is neither a reported profit nor the full group result, but it does document a constructive analyst view.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The next hard anchor for company-specific valuation is already scheduled. BYD announced a board meeting for October 29, 2026, at which directors will review and approve the unaudited third-quarter results for the nine months ending September 30, 2026, and their publication. Until then, the layers stay separate: the sector backdrop is weighing on the share price today, while the operating picture shows a stronger September against a still-declining cumulative total.

Geopolitics remains the wild card

Expansion abroad faces its own obstacles. Executive Vice President Stella Li described geopolitics on October 8 as the biggest challenge facing the company. BYD has no current plans to sell passenger cars in the United States. New models and profit hopes thus sit against a difficult international environment — one more reason the CATL-driven selloff is a burden on the stock rather than a substitute for assessing BYD's own figures.
