The Chinese automaker is no longer content to be judged purely on vehicle sales. Over the past week, BYD has unveiled plans to put humanoid robots in its showrooms, confirmed details of a flagship sedan with a four-figure range, and locked in a major European energy-storage contract — a flurry of activity that paints the picture of a company repositioning itself as a diversified technology group.

Robots enter the customer experience

The robotics programme passed a significant milestone on 31 July 2026, when BYD confirmed the machines had moved beyond the concept stage. The first functional prototypes are slated for an August 2026 unveiling, and the company says they will eventually greet visitors at its "Di Space" experience centres. Vice-chairwoman Stella Li has emphasised the scale of BYD's investment in artificial intelligence and robotics, with the humanoid push widely seen as a direct challenge to Tesla's Optimus project.

Industry observers interpret the move as an attempt to reframe BYD's identity — less a pure-play carmaker, more a technology conglomerate. The battery management and motor control expertise developed for electric vehicles transfers readily to robotics, giving the company a credible foundation for the pivot.

A storage landmark in Poland

Alongside the robotics announcement, BYD has secured a significant European infrastructure order. Together with Greenvolt Power, the company will build the Siedlce battery storage project in Poland, a 600-megawatt facility with 2.4 gigawatt-hours of capacity — set to become the largest installation of its kind in the country.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Construction begins in the third quarter of 2026. The project will use BYD's proprietary "Haohan" storage system, powered by the newly developed Blade Battery with a 2,710-ampere-hour capacity, engineered specifically for large-scale grid applications. This marks the second collaboration between the two companies in Poland, following earlier projects that together delivered 1.6 gigawatt-hours.

Export momentum drives the share price recovery

The stock, which closed Thursday at €10.40 after a 0.29 per cent dip, has climbed roughly 20 per cent over the past month. The rally follows record export figures that have offset weakness in BYD's domestic market.

June sales reached approximately 403,000 new-energy vehicles worldwide, with overseas deliveries hitting an all-time high of around 175,000 units. Exports now account for roughly 43.5 per cent of total sales — a first for the company. The overseas surge, up 94.7 per cent year-on-year, has more than compensated for a 22 per cent slump in China, where expiring government subsidies, a lingering property crisis and swollen dealer inventories continue to weigh on demand.

The share remains about 21 per cent below its August 2025 record high of €13.23, though it has moved decisively away from the 52-week low of €8.03 touched at the end of June.

Flagship sedan targets the premium tier

The company's premium ambitions take concrete form this month with the Great Han, its first D-segment flagship limousine for the Dynasty family. BYD has confirmed a range of 1,008 kilometres per charge, and the model was spotted undergoing road tests this week ahead of its official debut at the Chengdu Motor Show, running from 21 to 30 August 2026.

Dynasty division chief Lu Tian has promised further surprises at the event. The Great Han follows the Da Tang, the Dynasty line's first D-segment SUV, which went on sale in mid-June. Both models represent BYD's attempt to move upmarket, challenging the western and Japanese brands that have traditionally dominated the premium segment — a departure for a manufacturer known primarily for affordable vehicles.

BYD at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Australia pricing adds to the export push

The international offensive extends to Australia, where BYD announced pricing and specifications for the Seal 6 series on 30 July. The plug-in hybrids, featuring the new DM-5.0 super-hybrid technology, start at approximately €21,300 in the right-hand-drive market.

The aggressive pricing aligns with the company's stated target of selling 1.5 million vehicles outside China in 2026. With the broader Chinese market expected to contract by 11 per cent this year — a far steeper decline than the previously forecast 1 per cent, according to the China Passenger Car Association — BYD's ability to sustain export growth will be critical. Rivals including Leapmotor, Li Auto and Xiaomi face similar pressures as price competition intensifies and domestic demand cools.

The second quarter saw BYD deliver 557,090 battery-electric vehicles, a year-on-year decline but likely sufficient to reclaim the title of world's largest pure-EV seller from Tesla. Whether the Chengdu debut can help stabilise the home market — and whether the robotics and storage ventures can diversify the growth story — will become clearer in the months ahead.
